Behold! The fifth collaborative effort of Three Floyds and Mikkeller. This complex ale is just the beverage for canal boat trips in Copenhagen or the brutal Chicago winter. This year’s offering will be brewed in both Europe and in Chicago. Look for both editions and the subtle differences in each. Cheers and thanks for supporting craft beer.

Hazy deep gold beer, big off white head. Palate is light and a little crisp. Lovely lovely hoppy goodness! A touch of light skunk, sweet pine, orange led tropical fruits. Mango also prominent. Finishes smooth with mild creamy malt, skunk and more tropical fruits. Fabulous!

UPDATED: OCT 21, 2016 I might be stating the bleeding obvious but this is strictly a sipping style. Rich, powerful, and whilst fruity and malt heavy there’s a noticeable hop contribution although very much playing second fiddle. A bit of grassy funk too. Bit of a sledgehammer you don’t see coming!

Bottle 22fl.oz.

Clear medium yellow orange colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, fruity, moderate to light light heavy hoppy, sweet malt. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, sweet malt, fruity, dry, alcohol, rice - sake notes. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic. [20130515]

Bottle from Slowbeer. Pours thick golden orange with a creamy off-white head. Pungent aroma of caramel biscuits, juicy apricot, grapefruit and toffee. Taste is heavy malt - lots of big caramel but retains a moderate dried apricot hop profile. Nice and sweet, like a super malty IPA. Flavours weren’t as prominent as the aroma, but the body was nice and thick. Solid beer.

[email protected] VIII. Hazy orange colour, small white head. Aroma is sweetness, some honey, mild toffee and some fruitiness. Flavour is fruits, some herbs and sweetness. This is very much a rather thin version.

Vertical with the other one
Aroma is quite light with fruity notes and caramel. Flavour has biscuits, sweet fruity notes and some gooseberry bush. I like the Mikkeller version more due to the nice fruity notes it has.

Bottled at PBF. Cloudy pale golden, small head. Rich grapefruit aroma. Sweetish with full body and clean, somewhat mushy mouthfeel. Grapefruit and ink, aggressively bitter finish. Probably the best rice barley wine I’ve had, but that is a highly dubious distinction...

650 ml bottle @ PBF 2013.
Pours a cloudy golden colour with a white head. Aroma of grassy hops, lemongrass, herbs and some caramel. Flavour of rich floral hops, strong rice, caramel, herbs and some maltiness. Full bodied, thick mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Finishes grassy, floral and sweet. The Mikkeller one was a bit better I think with a better hop profile and less rice.

olio (10549) - Tampere, FINLAND - AUG 24, 2013
65 cl bottle @ PBF 2013.
Pours hazy golden color with a small head. Aroma of hops, sweet fruits, some grass and herb, caramel and mild toffee. Flavor of sweet fruits, rice, hops, hay and some syrup. Very sweet and hoppy.

tiong (7620) - Espoo, FINLAND - AUG 24, 2013
650ml bottle @ PBF 2013

Vertical with Mikkeller version - Pours lighter yellowish with a small foamy head. Aroma has much more fruity hoppy notes, sweet syrup, hints of grass and malts. Taste has a lighter body than the Mikkeller version, more hops and rice notable in the taste. Finish is hoppy, sweet and syrupy with some rice notes. This has even more DIPA notes.
