Draft at Brewpub 12/5/11. Very dark black, think tan head. Morot oil consistency. This is very heavy on the anise black - licorice taste. Pretty much overwhelms any other taste this has to offer. Not really digging it, wasnt a huge fan of anise and thats really all this one had to offer. holdenn (2127) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - AUG 21, 2012
FoBAB 2011. Murky brown with a thin head. Wow that’s a bag of dad’s black licorice right there. So much anise. Bitter anise flavors. Thin black licorice water. I like black licorice, but not in this beer. Not good. 7/3/6/3/12

Tasted on draft at FoBAB 2011. Pours hazy dark auburn with a thick beige head that leaves rocky lace. The nose is dominated by anise and black licorice with just a hint of sweet vanilla. The flavor is sweet vanilla and orange creamsicle up front, moving to total black licorice/anise domination. the body is medium and oily with light carbonation and a long vanilla anise finish. FoBAB 11’ This is the weirdest beer that I have tried today. It is basically tasted like Alpha King aged in Robitussin (yes the cough syrup) barrels... drewbeerme (3921) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 17, 2011

On tap. Slightly cloudy medium brown with thin beige head. Aroma heavy anise. Taste initially quite sweet with citrus and caramel malts, then the anise comes in and clubs the Robert the Bruce, Alpha King and citrus into submission. Really becomes almost an anise liqueur. Finish anise and slight hops. Slightly syrupy palate.User29624 (1687) - - NOV 26, 2011
An odd beer.
FoBAB. Interesting blend of Bruce and Alpha King. Pours brown with off white head. A TON of anise - I mean ton in the flavor and aroma. You have to like anise to stand this beer. Decent. deyholla (12583) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - NOV 18, 2011
Sampled from the tap at 2011 FOBAB. Poured a hazy brownish dirt amber with a grayish head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma was full of anise, licorice and spices, reminded me a bit of a urinal cake or WTF from Sam Adams. Flavor was similar with tons of anise and licorice with a bit of spice. Considering I don’t like anise, this was note enjoyable in the least. SrSilliGose (3324) - pouring bus, New Brunswick, CANADA - NOV 17, 2011

Draft at FoBAB 9. Holy shit, that’s a ton of anise/licorice. Pours a murky brooding amber/brown with an offwhite head. The nose is straight up licorice. Star anise just overpowers. The vanilla from the oak doesn’t help as it lends a sweetness to the nose that just makes it borderline offensive. Citrus is lost in there. On tasting, a sip is enough. I get it, it’s an anise beer. I just don’t get why?
