bomber from Capone’s. Had this on tap at Tap & Mallet in Rochester, NY and decided to try it again (though in a different medium). Tough to call this an "amber". Aroma of evergreen, pine resin, toffee, dry hops. Mouthfeel is very velvety, almost chewy. Taste is overwhelmingly oats, dry piney hops and bready malt. This reminds me of Victory Hop Devil in that the complexion of the beer is clearly good, yet I can’t get over the lingering mouth-drying effect. Overall, A decent beer from a great little city. How: Tap at Nail Creek, Utica NY.
The look: Clear dark golden body topped by a medium beige head with good retention.
In long: Nose is hop-forward with a dominant piney character but also herbal notes, citrus fruits and lemongrass. Taste is something else. I could really taste oatmeal flakes in this one, like my breakfast Quacker’s oatmeal I buy in bags that get me an oatmeal bowl in 5 minutes. Oatmeal, and lots of it. Also usual caramel and a bit of honey. Then the hops, assertive but not overwhelming, very much pine-tree and green pine-needles but with also a bit of dry grass and refreshing citric notes. Body was full and velvety, expansive carbonation that filled the mouth very every little sip, a mouthfeel that is obviously reminiscent of oatmeal stouts. Far from a masterpiece, if anything I liked it a lot mostly because there’s not many oatmeal IPAs out there, so this was something fun because unusual, but I’d probably quickly get tired of beers like this if full-on-oatmeal IPAs were commonplace. Entering my backlog of ratings makes me thirsty, I wish my local all-you-can-drink beer bar was open right now, or at least existed.
Bottle after Thanksgiving dinner. Slightly clearish cranberry pour with khaki med to large head. Awesome streaks of lacing surrounding the inners of my glass. Aromas are very hoppy and red ale dominant..piney. Smaller notes of spicy grains malt, caramel toast, pepper, rust, and cherry. On tap at Jeffrey’s bar poured into a Pyramid Breweries pint glass.
About a 1/2" off white head with a few chunks and fish eyes. Deep mohagany in color allows plenty of light through. Lacing down the side of the glass as I drink. Head settles to a thin film.
Smell of citrus hops with a faint malt backbone. Hard to pick up much else other than the hops.
Taste is hoppier than expected for an amber ale, which doesn’t bother me. Has a good bite and a lingering hop flavor. Able to pull out more of the malt notes as this warms up. Hints of oatmeal.
Mouthfeel is fairly light, mild carbonation. Hops are slightly sticky.
Overall better than I expected. Wouldn’t seek out again but wouldn’t turn down. A good addition for this new brewery.

Bottle courtesy of Andrew at Dadtoberfest 2012. Pours a deep amber red body with light off white head and lacing. Aroma is caramel malt, pine and tropic hop. Three Heads Loopy is a very clear, sparkling copper ale with a thick, lumpy, off white head that has great retention and lacing. It has a hoppy, grassy aroma with a resiny sweetness. It’s medium bodied, a little chalky at the finish. It has good balance. It’s pretty bitter, but appropriately so. There’s just a very slight hint of sweetness. It tastes grassy, fruity and it seems just a touch roasty. The aftertaste is long and bitter. The oatmeal adds mostly a texture to it. Interesting idea. Draught at Ginger Man, NYC. Clear deep amber beer with a nice offwhite head. Fruity aroma, malty, caramel, roasted, orange peels, citrus, chocolate, some cocoa, dark bread and licorice, some berries. Slightly hazy amber coloured body with a muddy brown glow and a thin, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of bright citrus and piney hops with a good malt note, some assertive roasty notes and a bit of a herbal dry kick. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong assertive hop notes with cascade and a bit of a piney kick that fades fairly quickly to fairly mild malty flavour with alcohol and a very pungent hop kick in the back. Aftertaste is nice, but fairly one-dimensional with only hops noticeable, but in a good way. Overall, a nice and rather fitting beer, aside for the fact that the malt (thus oatmeal) isn’t noticeable at all - and this is basically a hoppy amber ale with little else to support it’s intentions. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from K&E Discount Beverage in New Paltz, New York on 21-July-2012 for US$7.99 sampled at home in Washington on 02-September-2012.
