Velkyal (321) - Gordonsville, Virginia, USA - APR 30, 2014
Pours jet back with a light brown head. Upfront the aroma is bittersweet cocoa, with traces of coffee, spice (like all spice but toned down a touch), and a subtle earthiness. The usual suspects for stout flavours are there in abundance, dark chocolate, French roast coffee, balanced the subtle bite of the hops. The body is smooth, silky, and lusciously medium full (oo-er missus!), very moreish indeed. This is the base beer for the brewery’s Java Joe espresso stout.

Growler. I was actually a bit worried here. So many of the stouts that I have had recently have been huge imperial monsters - I was concerned this was going to come across thin and weak as a result. Not a problem! Nice chocolate and coffee notes, and very smooth, almost slick mouthfeel with plenty of body. A touch of sweetness, but balanced by the roast. Very well done, liked this a lot.

Really tasty dark-as-night stout. Not the thickest or chewiest, but still a great representation of the style. Slightly sweet and rich, very malty. Nice.

Draft at Sedona. Pours a dark brown color with a medium sized frothy brown head. Average head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, oats, mild herbal hops. The taste is roasted and sweet malts, oats, dark chocolate and a bitter hop finish. Medium bodied, low carbonation, good balance, very drinkable.

Dark black pour with one finger of chestnut tan head. Roasty aroma with coffee grounds and roast barley, fruit skins and burnt sugar. Roasty and toasty in the flavor with a moderate bitterness and caramellish quote. Medium body.
