Black beer with tan head and good lacing, light carbonation. Strong, winter warmer, strong alcohol, resinous. Strong beer, not a ton of complexity, but enough to satisfy, good for the style--rough and tumble beer, a true RIS!

On draft at the brewpub in Tucson. Pours black with a tan head. Mild malt nose. Flavors of dark fruits and a hints of coffee and chocolate. Smooth mouthfeel with moderate to light carbonation. Crisp finish. DiarmaidBHK (5662) - Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 16, 2012
Draft at brewpub. Pours Black with almost no head. Not getting much on the head. Lots of licorice and molasses notes on the tongue. Slightl hoppiness on the finish. Lingers a bit. No discernible alcohol burn. Solid for style. fata2683 (2176) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - APR 8, 2012
on tap(2012 vintage) pours thick black with a medium brown head. Aroma is equal parts malt and hops, roast, big pine and resinous hops. Flavor is big roast and semi-sweet cocoa with a big dry finish of ash and pine. Really nice stuff. troyc (2869) - Illinois, USA - APR 8, 2011
[Cask] Sampled on cask at the brewery in mid January. Pours an inky black color with a average looking brown head. Very viscous looking. Boozy aroma complements espresso and general roasted malts. The taste is vanilla, coffee, smoke and heavy roast. Thick palate. Lingering alcoholic heat. A really solid beer.

Growler gift from Southern Johnny. This was a weird but enjoyable Stout. Pour was near perfect (Black, thin tan head). But the aroma was like tar, licorice and chocolate. Medium mouth feel with a bitter caramel, coffee flavor. Damn Good. Beerlando (3342) - Orlando, Florida, USA - OCT 8, 2010
Growler at RBWG in March 2010. Pours a dark mahogany color with a lightly translucent, chestnut tinted edge. A thin, swirly, light brown film sits at the head, leaving behind minimal, spotted lacing. A quick shakeup indicates lacking viscosity, as the body seems a bit thin for the style. Aromas are very well balanced, giving notes of mild chocolate, burnt caramel roast, singed molasses, and some nougat. A subtle dash of earthen hops supports the roast in evening out the choco-caramel malt. Flavors follow suit, very smooth and chocolaty, pulled together nicely with toasted caramel, nougat, and mildly bitter, earthy hops. There might be a bit of coffee in there for good measure. As foreshadowed, the palate is a little on the thin side, lacking that weightiness that most good imperials show. Still, carbonation is spot on, and it comes across smooth, without much alcohol burn or cloying, sugary finish. Overall, it’s a pretty solid stout. Not stellar, but not terribly flawed either.
