2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Poured from a bomber into a snifter. Dark cola brown with a modest tan head. Aroma is nutty, dark malt with no real hop presence outside of some earthiness. Flavor is a bit better than the aroma let on, but not much. Again fairly nutty malt, with some slightly metallic undertones, and some very earthy hops. Palate is also a little thin and watery. As this warms up a little I feel the flavors are falling even flatter. Quite forgettable, and doesn’t have any of the ’wow’ factor I expect from a black IPA.
"not an inspired black ipa. decent balance, look, feel, etc...roasted malt (muted), muted bitterness with a decent dose of citrus hops, but not like your usual dipa. just ok."

Pours dark cola with a small head. Nose is roasted malt, dry chocolate powder, weird vegetal note. Mouth is a fairly gross "menage" of vegetation, cocoa powder, and roasted malts. Some metallic coffee grounds too. Not good. Strykzone (7356) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - SEP 19, 2012
From my buddy Hayduke. This was opened at an ESBLS tasting. Dark brown with a nice beige head that falls in the middle but stands on the sides. This is more hoppy and earthy than what so many black IPAs are. It is a bit roasted, too. Interesting but not really my style. monk191 (1976) - Portland, Oregon, USA - SEP 3, 2012
Great nutty aroma and beautiful deep red color. Taste is a nice balance of malt and hops with vanilla/caramel notes that really help the overall flavor!

LOOK: Dark brown, bordering black, huge soap sud head leaves plenty of lace.
SMELL: Roasted malt and piney hops. A bit of alcohol.
TASTE: Bitter, piney resinous hops and some grapefruit. Smokey roasted malt, faint sweetness, and lots of alcohol.
FEEL: Medium bodied and over carbonated, leaving a dry finish with some char and hop flavor in the finish.
OVERALL: A pretty average, lumbering black IPA from the now defunct brewery. Has held up well, this must be well over a year or two old. DedicatedToFun (4000) - Santa Monica, California, USA - JUL 5, 2012

Received as a birthday gift. Don’t know much about Tied House. Pours cola brown. Woodsy hop aroma. Has a good sparkle to it. Leans toward the hop rather than malt side. Strong hop bite to it. Aftertaste is a little weird to me. Dogbrick (13010) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - JUN 13, 2011
This beer is a dark reddish-brow color with a medium light beige head that diminishes to an outer ring quickly. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of piney, roasted malt and yeast. Medium body with flavors of grassy hops, pine and toasted malt. The finish is piney up front with a short grapefruity hops aftertaste. Decent overall.
