Bottle. Almost black. Very, very Malty; roasted malts, lots and lots of dark bitter chocolate, coffee, caramel, toffee. Fruity; sour fruit, berries. Hoppy; balancing earthy hop bitterness. Bittersweet roast malty throughout with a distinctly sour fruit/hop edge. Long dry roasty finish. Very drinkable. Nice beer! (2010-03)

A dark cola brown coloured beer with a weak off white head. A well rounded aroma of roasted malts, plenty of chocolate and nutty caramel aromas. Dry mouthfeel. A rich malt flavour of chocolate, caramel, quite sweet in taste. All of which lasts into a lingering finish.

Tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in May 2008. Cask, gravity dispense. Ruby black in colour with a thin white head. Strong roast grain note lingers long in the nose. Thick creamy texture to the smooth mouthfeel. Poor lacing throughout. Dark malts give a burnt toast note at the start which fades to give roast flavours of milky coffee and tablet. Moist maltloaf base gives a syrupy dates, sultanas and molasses, sweet in the mouth. Very slight prickle of hop resins noted briefly in the short aftertaste. Finish is very heavy and malty with vinous fruit notes of prunes and treacle toffee. This is an excellent English Strong Ale, though hard to find in Scotland. Highly recommended. Bottle at The Penguin Beer Bobbing/13 Beers of Halloween tasting. Good yeasty apple, cranberry and coal aroma. Burgundy under a dense creamy tan collar. Mellow and balanced with dusty cocoa, roast, apple peel, plastic. Solid tasty stuff.

Bottle conditioned, 500ml from Tipples bottle Shop, Norwich. Dark brown, ruby with brownish head. <i>Bottled at Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm. </i> Cloudy dark nut brown, small coarse head. Fruity roasty nose with some bubblegum. Fairly sweet with velvetty soft mouthfeel. Chewy, gently roasty malt gives a mouthfilling solid body and pleasant flavors of wheat bread, spuns sugar and chocolate. Gently warming finish with some light coffee bitterness. (Bottle, Monk’s Café, Stockholm, 10 Nov 2008) Very dark ruby colour, almost black, with brief foamy brown head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of dark fruit, chocolate, wild berries and hints of port. Malty, fruity taste with chocolate, sweetened black coffee and dark fruit. Medium body, fairly sweet. Low carbonation makes it quite flat. Nicely balanced with a bittersweet finish. In short: bittersweet fruit and chocolate with a touch of port.
