First tasted this in Coanes, Johnstone in December 1992. Cask, handpump dispense. Ruby black in colour with mahogany highlights and a thin creamy white head. Strong aroma of liquorice and port. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malt complex gives huge booming maltloaf base with molasses, damsons and black cherries evident. There is a very slight prickle of hop resins in the aftertaste but this is very difficult to detect. Finish is very warming and complex with strong overtures of alchoholic notes of port, plum brandy and Grand Marnier slipping easily down the throat. Dangerously drinkable Barley Wine and highly recommended but very hard to find in Scotland. oh6gdx (26485) - Vasa, FINLAND - JUL 17, 2010
Bottled (from Estate Wine, Holstebro). Ruby colour, mediumsized beige head. Aroma is fruits, raisins, some toffee, caramel malts and some mild fruity bitterness as well. Flavour is quite much the same. Mild spicyness as it warms up. Lovely balanced beer. Dedwoods42 (7) - West Midlands, ENGLAND - MAY 22, 2012 does not count
A wickedly strong ale that wrecks the senses and explodes with flavours. A personal favourite. Svesse (9135) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - DEC 7, 2013
(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 22 Nov 2013) Dark reddish amber colour with brief, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of caramel, dried fruit, orange peel and a touch of cinnamon. Malty, fruity taste with caramel, dried fruit, orange peel, citrus, hints of cinnamon and a sweet, vinous finish with a generous spicy bitterness. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness. Complex, tasty and quite strong, but still in excellent balance. Lovely beer! charlotte (5499) - rødovre, DENMARK - APR 13, 2012

arms, Walsall. Very hazy chestnut beer with tight medium head and excellent lacing. Aroma is light malt and biscuit. Taste is biscuit, dried fruit, some hop bitterness, toffee and toasted malts. Medium bodied. Very good.
Swirly looking red beer with a strawberry like aroma and a strong and fruity flavour. Overall a good fruity strong ale. berkshirejohn (6828) - Bracknell, Berkshire, ENGLAND - JUN 6, 2009
50cl of Christmas Ale at 7.6% from Utobeer, Borough Market. A slightly hazy golden brown with a small and rapidly fading off-white head. Rich christmas cake aroma with glace fruit, brandy, port, raisins and caramel and just a hint of vanilla. Thick, oily, texture, with a luscious booze-soaked fruit cake flavour - with chunks of apricot and pineapple as well as raisins and sultanas. The finish is warming and port-like and covers the alcohol really well. Excellent, even though Christmas was five months ago.
