Tongerlo Prior is a full-bodied beer with fruity notes that develop into a spicy and slightly flowery bitterness of hops. An authentic abbey ale, the age-old tradition of the White Canons of Tongerlo lives on in this officially recognised Belgian abbey ale. Re-fermentation in the bottle gives this beer a more intense taste and aroma as well as a longer shelf life. Tongerlo Prior was chosen as the best European blond abbey/trappist ale in the 2011 World Beer Awards.

Bottle in some ancient looking cellar bar round the corner from the river in Ghent. The barman took one from the temperature control fridge and poured it in to a glass. All foam. He deemed that the bottle wasnt suitable for consumption and went and got another one. I think most bars would have just handed me the bottle and told me to get on with it once the foam had died down. Real integrity move. Pours hazy Golden with a thick White head. Nice yeasty slightly earthy aroma. Pretty typical tripel notes. Sweet caramel and spicy Belgian yeast character. Sourish wheat and white pepper. A high grade tripel.

Dark golden pour with generous foam head. A: typical yeasty fruity Tripel, mostly marzipan, some Pilsener aroma/malts, faint lemon note. Boozy sensation as well. Yeast deposit reveals some metal / copper notes. T: fruity, yeasty Tripel with mostly marzipan, sun dried tomato, almonds. Copper taste in first sips. Dito development, individual tastes start to swell more into a slightly peppery sensation. Aftertaste is a bit boozy with banana notes. Not bad, but also not that exciting. However, as far as yeasty fruity Tripels go, a classic.

9% ABV Sweet and faintly smoky nose. Lightly carbonated first mouthful. Full of wheaty, roasted malty flavor followed after a perfect interval (still trying to figure out how this happens) by the alcoholic gravitas that only a properly brewed triple has. What impresses me most about this beer is how your taste buds are greeted by a warm embrace of a bubbly carbonation, and your brain is already thinking warm safe thoughts then comes that hefty left hook of the tripel. So that first impression, that first mouthful is really deceptive. The rest of the experience is predictably that of finely brewed tripel, bitter hops borne on a cumulus of alcohol. The aftertaste is distinctly alcoholic. You get that buzz right quick. A very nice opening drink. I would recommend this beer to those who think they know tripels. Goes on Favorites List

Bottle. Golden color. Small white head without lacing on the glass. In aroma and flavor: spicy, herbal notes, with some pepper notes. Medium dryness. Medium bitterness for tripel style. Light body. Overall: good beer, but obviously missing some head on the top ccc
