Sample at the Ann Arbor brewpub. Dark brown color with a medium beige head that diminishes quickly to an outer ring. Small patches of lacing. Chocolate, malt and coffee aroma. Medium body with flavors of cocoa, roast malt and stale coffee. The finish is roasty with a bittersweet chocolate aftertaste. Non Beer Trip Beer Trip Beer #90. Keg at Jolly Pumpkin Ann Arbor, 3/12/16. Clear dark red, large frothy tan head, good retention. Aroma of dry roasted malts and dark chocolate. The taste is roasted malts, milk and dark chocolate. Thin-medium bodied, clean.

Tap at the brewpub, Detroit. Pours dark chocolate with a tan ring of lacing. Aroma is lots of chocolate, some light coffee, and roasted malts, light licorice. Flavor is similar. Chocolate heavy. Body is light. Otherwise good.

5oz on tap at Jolly Pumpkin in Ann Arbor. Nice coffee, dark bitter chocolate. Delicious. Fudge-like. Moderate bitter taste, lighter sweet. More dry finish. Medium-plus body. Light carbonation. Decent bit of chewiness to it. Mostly clear dark brown color. Ring of off-white head. Some bits of lace. Pour on tap at the brewery, dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of roast, acidic malt, dark cocoa, some slight cherry into a bit of vanilla, some slight coffee. Tap: Deep, husky brown colored body. Far from "black". Pretty light-hued considering it’s a stout. Not much head, either, just a thin khaki film that grazes the top. Nice aroma of cocoa powder, chocolate shavings, roasted malt, a hint of cream, & plenty of milk chocolate. Bittersweet combo, perhaps a tad more on the sweet side. One dimensional, but delivers as advertised. Flavor includes more bittersweet chocolate, roasted cacao beans, mildly astringent roast, & a faint, back-end sugary sweetness. Scorched brown sugar. I also get a very tiny hint of coffee bean. Nice balance all around, despite the simplicity. A little thin for a stout as well, perhaps enhancing the roasted astringency at times.
