Barrel aged beer week begins! Even had my favorite waitress working, although I can never tell if she’s angry at me. Oh well. Beer is on tap. Pour is deep, dark brown, and almost black in color, with a small khaki head. Somewhat boozy aroma. The barrel presence is quite large to with this having a big wine note. More barrel presence in the taste. Tannic, chocolate, and some toffee. It’s almost tart tasting, but not quite. Finish is more wine flavor. Medium bodied, with some spotty lacing. Very interesting, and pretty good. A little to much of the port barrel for my liking, though. LamarBurton (376) - California, USA - MAR 18, 2011
Winterfest 11. From notes. This one is a winner. Very complex aroma, lots of vinous red fruit notes, some oak, almost a nutty quality. Flavor is even more-so: Chocolate, toffee, coffee, some smoke, some red wine...very nice. Creamy and rich on the tongue. poured generously from tap at Town Hall, thick rich mocha head overflowing the glass a good two or three fingers deep. creamy and rich head.
smells of grape, raisin, dates, brown sugar, alcohol, sweet port and malt. a bit of roast and just a slight hint of solvent.
so creamy and a nice medium body a bit dry and a touch of alcohol heat.
tastes of raisin, brown sugar, oak/wood, currants, dates, a little sourness and acidity from the port barrel. as it warms there is much more grape and the malt surfaces more along with some caramel and roast.
very easy to drink, its not heavy. but it is sweet. if it was a little less sweet i’d give it a 5. a little less alcohol in the smell and flavor and i’ll hit it a 5 on those as well.
this is one amazing beer. a pinch away from being a perfect 5
This beer would pair will with lamb... kalamata olives, feta cheese. guess I’m going greek. you could go Gyro or Lamb Kabobs with feta and kalamata stuff grape leaves. Fantastic!
