On-tap at the brew pub: Clear light rusted orange with a small cap of dusty whitened foam that lasts for god length. Small stringy lacing sticks.
Aroma is fairly clean and paled down in a slight honey sweetness tossed with a sweet caramel covered apple, and a tired nuttyness. Only lightly tinted with a fruity-like hoppyness.
Taste is quite nice and not as pale as what the smell would lead you to think. Though at first, this was served colder then it ought to be and wasn’t as impressive. Once warmed up, this gets actually quite fantastic for a English style Pale. Clean, crisp, soft, smooth, and malt loaded with an easy going body and fullness. Mostly sweet upfont and fairly solid with malt flavor of nuts and honey dashed with nice nuances of apples, pairs, and starfuit. Has a crunchy hop tone of toasted leafyness around the edges. But the hops take a turn, finely coming in with more character as it begins to finish with a fantastic little pinch of toasted piney grapefruityness and delicately squeezed in bitterness. Quite a subtle ride of flavor. Nice.
Feel is steady and even with a smooth malt soaked body thats nearly silky smooth at the front with a nice little snappy crispness to it that seems to always keep a tender toasted bread and piney hop tone as the sweeter side makes the main hold through most of its flavor and medium malty body.
Big time drinkability. Its clean and smooth taste and body is eager for some easy sessioning as this is quite effortless to put back. Not a surprise really coming from Mr. Hoops; always brewing something pretty darn drinkable. Pigfoot (2268) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - APR 12, 2006
Little Stubby, named for the new, shorter fermenting tank just installed at Town Hall, and this is the first beer brewed with it...more brewing capacity at TH? Oh, my, things have gone from great to greater around here.
Maris Otter floor malts, Kent Goldings hops, and a new, Irish yeast make up this ale. It’s higher in hops than a typical ESB, which this may remind some of, so I went with the pale ale category, though it’s even hoppier than that, I think.
Two pints during the initial release dollar-hour, and now I pour from a growler...clear, classic bronze cast, with milky white foam above...definitely looks the part of an English ale...
Aroma: bittersweet, bristling with that classic EK Goldings smell, light caramel tones, whispers of fruit, ...quite nice.
Taste: Big, beefy hops grap at the palate right away, and stick to the mouth through the beer’s stay...and then some...this is some hoppy stuff here, but fully English style. If I wasn’t spoiled by the Masala Mama, or the better west coast versions, this would be my favorite. Crisp, clean, fully flavored and jumping with hops! Malt is classic here, too, imparting a bready feel, mixed with caramel and toast...Medium bodied, tight finish, but long on the hops, clinging hard on the tongue and the memory...excellent drinkability...seriously good. My kind of session beer, to boot.
Tough time at Town Hall tonight, as they also released a new batch of Midnight Howler Coffee Stout, and an honey barrel aged version of the Grand Cru...above and beyond their normally great selections and the cask varities...is there such a thing as too much good beer?
