Smoked Hefe pours a glowing, cloudy, orange color. Small thin white head forms and quickly disappears.
The smokiness of this brew doesn’t really hit the smell to much. It’s there but muted. But you do get the usual Hefe smell. A little bit of spice, lemon, and most importantly banana. I love banana smell and taste in my beer. What can I say, Hefe Weizen was one of the first styles of craft beer that I loved.
Now in the taste it’s a different story. The Beechwood smoked malted barley hits first. It coats the tongue and sits in the mouth. It gets smokier and smokier as you take sip after sip. It’s really a nice welcome to the usual Hefe. Then the same ingredients come in. Banana, clove, lemon, wheat, etc. It’s a lovely taste and the smoked malted barley hits the spot here.
The mouthfeel is smooth and medium bodied. I just wanted to keep on drinking and drinking. I wanted to finish the whole growler at one sitting but I was a good boy. esjaygee (3902) - Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA - OCT 20, 2011
On tap at Town Hall. Hazy yellow-amber with a thin white head. Aroma of smoked malt, what, pale malt, campfire and a touch of banana. Taste of lemon, sweet roasted malt, smoke and banana that comes through a bit on warming. While it’s decent, a little less smoked malt might let a bit more of the hefe flavors ring through. Draft. Pours a slightly hazed straw color with a slight white head. The aroma is smoky but after that you also get some nice Belgian yeast (banana) and spice notes. Medium mouthfeel. The initial taste is smoky which transitions to a decent normal hef then back to smoke. The smoke lingers for a while. On tap at the brewpub. Pours a cloudy, orange-golden colored body with a thin, creamy, white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a moderate lacing. Aroma is pretty cool. Lots of smoke and peat, but lots of sweet wheats and some citrus too. Banana esters, clove, and doughy yeast. Flavor is similar. Lots of wheat, smoke, and peat with some banana, citrus, dough, clove spices, and a very light bitterness. Finishes wheaty and smokey with a smooth, sweeter finish. Dries before leaving a fairly lengthy aftertaste. Medium, very creamy, smooth body and a light, creamy carbonation. Overall, a pretty cool beer. Lots of typical fruity wheats and hefe flavors, but a really nice, distinct smokiness that balances very nicely. Highly enjoyable.

GABF 2007. Smells like sausage with a citrus accent. Interesting. Tastes like sausage, with smoke coming up in a dry finish that is also highlighted by clove. Somewhat peaty on the sides. On tap at the 2007 GABF: Hazy golden pour has a nicely-lacing froth of wispy-white head. Aroma of lemon citrus, banana, and a touch of clove but not much smoke character. Body starts about average for the style with a little smokiness, wheaty sweetness and some bready German yeastiness. GABF 2007. Pours a pale cloudy gold, topped with a finger of firm white head. Intriguing balance between bacon smoke and creamy wheat; they seem polar opposite in character, but yet they actually are balanced in their polarity and play well together. A pleasing wheat acidity comes out up front on the palate, followed by a thick layer of smoke, which is adequately restrained on the meaty or salty dimensions. Interesting clove and banana phenols present too, creating a bizarre mix of flavors that actually taste pretty good. Highly original!
