Don’t like the heavily smoked beer, and this one is no exception as it overwhelms the palate with a lot of smoke character. Again, works well for some people and it just didn’t sit well with me. 3fourths (9350) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - OCT 13, 2008
UPDATED: MAR 13, 2013 Mostly clear medium dark yellow colored body with a white head. First note in the nose is some strange soggy burnt bread crust with some spiced fruit and clover honey with smaller touches of lemon. The smoke character is quiet but spectacularly vibrant and natural. Body is extremely rich and full, vibrant, thick, perfectly crafted for that authentic full body seen in true German helles. Subtle, quiet, amazingly drinkable and delicious... hits the spot. heemer77 (5358) - Urbandale, Iowa, USA - SEP 12, 2008
Bright gold body with a nice white head. Light smoke with some bread crust. A little bit of wood. the taste is dry with lots of smoke and some wood. There is also some hint of grass. Nice and smoky for those that like it. FlacoAlto (4197) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - DEC 20, 2008
This golden beer has a nice, clean grain aroma (sweet grain and a touch of light toast) to it up front, but this starts to yield to a smoky malt character that adds a richness to this brew. The smoke is light smelling but quite savory and almost seems like an apple-wood like smoke character; this has a salty smoke but also a fruity note to it at times.theisti (4142) - Kansas, USA - OCT 20, 2008
The beer feels light as it first hits my tongue, but it picks up a savory richness to it as it slides across the tongue. The full smoke character of this beer does not get in the way of the pale malt grain notes that should be the center point of a Helles. Malt flavors of lightly sweet grain, pale biscuit notes and a nice, subtle, toasty edge towards the finish. This is extremely quaffable with just a hint of hop bitterness in the finish; the bitterness has to compete with the more noticeable smoke character, but it has, perhaps, a bit more longevity than the smoke in the finish.
I would love to drink this by the liter. It is a fantastic combination of base beer Helles characteristics and smoke malt. Neither is too dominating over the other and together they work to bring an extra flavorful balance.
UPDATED: OCT 24, 2008 Growler provided by beastiefan2k for the 10/18 tasting. Pour is mostly clear golden with a white head. Aroma of smoke, barbecue, smoked ham. Really not much else, though, smoke is in no way overpowering. Taste is maltiness, with a nice gentle smokiness surrounding and enveloping the taste. Really nice melding of the smoke. Palate is medium thin, coats nicely, though still very drinkable. This was a really nice beer, thanks for hauling it back for the crew Eugene. Beer of the night for the tasting.

Pint @ brewpub. Color is completely clear straw color with almost no remnants of a head. Not enticing visually at all. Aroma is very clean, lightly doughy, lightly herbal, malts. There is a subtle touch of sweet smoke. Taste is a bit more crisp with some light herbal hops coming through. Finishes with a beautiful light smoke that sits on the back of the throat for a while. And I get something like just a touch of jalapeño. May just be a cool way that the hops are presenting themselves. Has a nicely easy drinking, light mouthfeel as well. I really like this light smoked, a bit more than the Schlenkerla. drewbeerme (3920) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - AUG 17, 2008
on tap at GTMW ’08. pours clear gold with basicially no head. grainy and lightly smoked aroma. flavor has touch of grain and smoke. enjoyed this one! pantanap (3366) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - AUG 15, 2008
gtmw 08.... clear golden yellow brown with a non-existent head....lightly smoked and corny malt aroma... light smoke and sweet malt that never became tiresome (granted i only had about 3 ounces of this). and i found this quite drinkable which was a pleasant surprise for me. kmweaver (3207) - Petaluma, California, USA - SEP 21, 2008
Draft @ Town Hall. Pours a clear, bright golden color; thin white head with fine-bubbled lacing. Smoke, roasted meats, and some spiciness in the aroma; citrus and sugar; solid, well-integrated smoke presence. Medium mouthfeel: chewy sugars, citrus, and a smoke presence that shows itself more clearly mid-palate: toast, roasted meats, and light spiciness; nicely crisp, dry, clean, and very drinkable. A nice, softly smoked lager. Medium finish: toastiness, crisp bitterness, and very light sugar; just a touch of spicy smoke at the far end. Indra (2711) - Suburbia, Kansas, USA - OCT 18, 2008
Draught from growler. Nicely smoky and peaty notes in the nose, some lighter herbal and faintly sweet malty touches along with a gentle fruitiness in the background. Pale gold color, mostly clear, head is mostly diminishing (not a flaw, it’s a growler after all). Flavor is very nicely balanced, with the smokiness present throughout but not overpowering the more delicate maltiness and noble hop profile, finishing with a pleasing dryness and mild bitterness blended with the lingering smoke. Fine carbonation with a light-medium body, some crispness. Overall quite tasty, recommended. Thanks to Eugene!
