On tap at the brewpub. Pours a near clear muddy brown with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice note of bourbon and vanilla with caramel sweet grains and a touch of grass underlying. Flavor has more sweet grain and grass but the same nice vanilla bourbon combination supporting. UPDATED: FEB 12, 2012 Tap. Clear amber pour with a clingy creamy head. Maple and smoked peat are present on nose and taste. Some caramel sweetness as well. arminjewell (9664) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - MAR 26, 2012
Glad I finally got to try the base, and I can see why I like the barrel aged version so much. Dark reddish ruby pour with nice creamy tan head on tap at the brewery, aroma brought big deep notes of dark fruits, lots of sweet maple, caramel and toffee notes, some bittering earthy and smoky notes as well, really nice and complex. Taste has a bit of heat but nothing overwhelming, a slight grassy note comes into sweet toffee, caramel, maple notes with a nice cocoa, earth and smoke notes. Very, very nicely done.

Keg @ Town Ball. Deep chestnut colored pour with a small head. Nose is rich, quite malty. Apple pie, toasted grain. Light pepper. Mellow booze. Butterscotch. Flavor is really well balanced. Sweet, earthy, a little hot. Chewy caramel malt. Baked apples. A touch of dark chocolate. Lovely stuff. Full bodied, smooth and supple. thirdeye11 (6160) - Dallas, Texas, USA - MAR 27, 2011
(Draught at GABF) clearish amber with creamy lasting tan head. Nose of honey, caramel, maple, and creme brulee. Taste of big honey, earthy, tobacco, maple, pine, and toasty caramel. Creamy, ridiculous perfect linger and body. One of the best barleywines I’d had in a long time. JK (6160) - St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA - OCT 8, 2006
My last of the night at the 2006 ABR. This is very good. Not heavily hopped but on the sweet side. Honey, fermending fruit, and oak are in the flavor. Heavy on the palate. Low carbonation; actually almost still. This is a complex beer and its qualities hide any alcohol aroma or flavor. One of Town Hall’s best. Skyview (6056) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - FEB 9, 2009
On draught during Winterfest 2009 in St Paul, MN. Pours a hazy dark copper brew with a thick off-white head that quickly dissipates to a film top. Aroma of caramel malt, raisins, some brown sugar, a touch of toffee and some prunes. Taste is medium bodied, flavors of toffee, brown sugar a hint of raisin, and some vanilla. Finish is semi-sweet with a distinct alcohol metallic bite in the end. Strong overall and would like to try this with a few years of aging. beerguy101 (5360) - Newark, California, USA - SEP 17, 2010
Sampled at GABF on 9/16/2010. This barleywine pours a medium orange gold color. Medium to small sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity, bready and sweet with a touch of smoke. A medium to full bodied barleywine. The malts are caramel, sweet and orange. The hops are earthy. Lots of orange and orange rind flavors. There is some maple and smoke in the background. Nice balance. Touch of alcohol bite. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
