My first Laughing Buddha beer, the Purple Yam Porter, is a hard one to follow-up. Indeed, the Mango Weizen seemed something like an after-thought. The brewers were busy celebrating the creation of their fantastic yam-based drink when a guy from marketing rushes in, frantically waving his arms and sputtering something about “product expansion.” They eventually translate this block of sounds into English, which suggests that maybe they should make more than one beer. So they reluctantly put their industrial garb back on and get back to the tanks, cranking out the spiritless Mango Weizen. It’s a tangerine colored beer, fashionably bald, and yet riddled with bubbles. The aroma is light and sweet, shouting with tangerine and whispering a little mango, lime, graham crackers, and then even more tangerine scents to bracket the package. This, I appreciate. But this volume of flavor falls on deaf ears for the palate, where a thin whine of tangerine races past the palate before disappearing. Not only does this not taste very much like mango (I had one nearby for comparison’s sake) but what flavor exists is hurriedly pushed past the palate into oblivion before my taste buds can say “Huh?” A good attempt, but nowhere near the same level of satisfaction as the purple yam porter. bu11zeye (13239) - Frisco (Dallas), Texas, USA - APR 16, 2009

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. The smell is musty, very wheaty, citrus, sort of weird, and malts. The look is slightly muddy, ok white head, and golden in color. The taste is wheat, fruits, and not much else. Rosebud butternuts (2398) - Denton, Texas, USA - APR 2, 2009

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours a cloudy orange with white head. Aroma of wheat with some citrus. Not much flavor here, some light wheat with a splash of citrus. Mouth feel light-medium, kinda watery though, with high carbonation. Overall, just a weak, watery summer beer....would be ok by the pool! scrizzz (2223) - Bothell, Washington, USA - MAR 24, 2009
Juicy ripe mango aroma, clean gold and a squishy white head. Very clear to be unfiltered, but whatever. Thirst quenching and very juicy. The mango and wheat marry together so nicely even though there isn’t much depth, there is still a level of complexity. I love what they are doing with their beers. beerinmarch (2830) - Washington, USA - JAN 27, 2009
Hazy orange pour with a soft thin white head. Very fruity mango nose, soft wheat. At first I kinda enjoyed this beer, refreshing and a different flavor, but towards the end of the bottle the mango just overpowered to much and it was a it to juice-like. Soft wheat in the finish with a mild citrus. Could use a touch more crispness go it.
