5000 (6862) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - NOV 26, 2011
Bottle:   Nearly black, quite dark, large foamy beige head, lovely lacing.   Looks the biz.   Soft roasted malts on the nose, some chocolate malt perhaps.   Has a powdery nose that reminds me of Pike XXXXX.   Roasted malt bitterness on the tongue.   Some hop aspect, but not too heavy.   Not sure what to look for in regards to Purple Yams, but if they are here they seem very insignificant.   A little dry, somewhat chalky, soft roasted malts linger.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   I was thinking this one would be out of the ordinary, but I am just not seeing it.   Otherwise, fairly solid Porter.   Could stand to be a bit heavier tho.

3fourths (9347) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - SEP 10, 2009
Bottle. Dark brown body, tan head, mediocre structure. Nose is dusty chocolate malt along with a strange almost-lactic/cheesy rye or wheat scent which I guess is the yam. No vanilla noticed at all. Body is medium, texture is uninspiring, a little dry, a little zesty... flavor is your typical too-sweet porter with an abundance of chocolate malt and a little bread crust, again no vanilla, and only a small amount of any yam flavor. Better than expected but nothing great.

From Skyview. This beer has an aroma of sweet potatoes, or should I say, yams. Dark brown color. Medium palate. Lots of starch in this beer, some more sweet potato in the flavor, as well as malt.

Skyview (6055) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - JUL 7, 2009
Received 22-oz bomber via trade with 5000. Pours a semi-dark and opaque brown colored brew with a thick tan head that has nice retention and excellent lacing. Aroma of roasted dark malt, a hint of sweet potato/pumpkin, egg yoke and a touch of vanilla. Taste is medium bodied, smooth, with flavors of toasted dark malt, vanilla, some light coffee, a hint of pumpkin and some chocolate. Finish is semi-sweet with a dark malty aftertaste that slowly disappears.

kramer (6682) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 21, 2009
22 oz bottle, via 5000. Pours a clear dark brown body with a small fizzy light brown head that faded to a thin ring. The nose is chocolate malt with a touch of vanilla and roast. Lightly reminds me of sarsaparilla soda as well. A bit weird in its bitterness, I guess that’s the yams talking. A bit on the sweeter side with a nice real vanilla bean accent that really emerges on the finish with a touch of alcohol. Not sure what to think of this one, it really has a lot of earthy dirt like quality to it. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a slightly grainy texture before the clingy sweetness takes hold. A bit too much fizzy frothy carbonation. All in all an interesting experiment I suppose, but not the tastiest result.

Bomber I’ve had in the fridge for a while and thought would be great to share with bikesandbeer while he’s in town. Shared with him and my girlfriend Cyn. Pours black with a tan head. Nose is rich very malty with maybe a bit of vanilla. Taste is sweet and malty with a lot of kick, some vegetalness. nice.

Deep amber beer with a sweet cocoa and toasted chewy malts. A bit of cocoa. A bit of heavy coffee and a very odd cardboardy papery aroma that reminds me of walking into a pre 1990 NSLC. Flavour is a bit thin, but it’s still alright.
