"Hofbrau" in German means "the brew of royalty." Trader Joe’s Hof Brau Bock is a fine example of the regal brewing traditions still found in Germany today. This outstanding bock is golden in coclor, very rich and moderately hopped. 22 IBUS. Brewed with three types of imported malts, Hallertau aroma hops and lager yeasts.

Golden amber color. Head is medium and foamy with nice, pillowy look. Some lacing. A nice, malty flavor. As you may or may not know, TJ’s brand is brewed by Gordon Biersch. I like this Bock better than the GB Blonde Bock (which I also like very much.) Quite frankly, this is an INCREDIBLE bargain at the price. I will be going back to TJ’s and buying half a dozen six packs. Can you find a "better" light Bock? Of course....but NOT at this price.

I thought this was an average Bock, and agree with some of the other guys, no head and seemed a little lacking.

Clear gold with a medium white head. Malty, fruity and lightly floral aroma. Very sweet. Taste has notes of grain, wheat, grass, floral hops and some clove. A little bitterness and alcohol detected in the finish. Body is full and round with very lively carbonation. Not much lacing or head retention. Not bad, but boring.

Some malt aroma-no head whatsoever. Pretty decent maibox overall, but not very elegant-just a big german malt flavor without much else to add to it.

Golden beer with frothy head that flattens out . Nose is weak and has aroma of grass. Flavor has straw and grain right up front with the malts. A okay bock but it needs some work.

UPDATED: JUL 10, 2005 The conglomeration of liquid particles gather in the prison-like confines of the glass, emitting a rusty golden hue and a rather sparse, star-like atomospheric configuration of spume. The translucency of it’s demeanor was gravely prosaic, so crystal clear that I felt my disgruntlement prematurely. The redolence of discontent laid itself before me..soft and wilted time-weathered fruit.. tart, acid touched grains.. and the sad remembrance of a dirty, sweaty morning. A lone blossom flavors a field of dirt. A sweet air carries the lonely flower’s dominion but the harsh environment hides it’s beauty. In other words, it looked like a stupid golden lager and barely had any head. It was so damn clear that I knew that it was gonna suck-ass before i took a sip. It smelled like a lager and It tasted like a lager with some sweetness and a touch of floral hops.

Pours a full, clear gold color and is topped by a frothy thin tan head that disappears fairly quickly. The aroma is grainy smelling and has a bit of alcohol in the finish. The aroma is pretty subdued, and because of that fairly disappointing. The taste is sweet up front with a solid sweet malt taste that has a hint of toffee to it. There is perhaps a hint of spicy hop notes here in the flavor and a bit of bitterness in the finish. This is clearly a well made beer, but it just is lacking in flavor and depth.

This has got to be the lightest colored bock I’ve come across, it’s even lighter than the Vienna Lager. The malt here is funky: a wierd caramel that is slightly toasty but just tastes stale. Usually bocks are flavorful enough that the typical lager funk is never present, but it is here, especially in the finish. Not a great start for the TJ beers.

I really liked this Bock. Leave it to Trader Joes to come through with a good brew and they will. Deep Golden color. Roger Burks was right with the transition of tastes, I completely agree. Definately good after taste that welcomes the next draw. Medium body. Good for the money, but what else is there to expect from TJ’s.
