3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Aroma of cobwebs, cloves, coriander, some prune and the slightest hint of papaya. Appears a dark brown color with ruby hues; head is initially frothy, like root beer, but quickly dissipates. Flavor is intense cloves and ginger, with some nutmeg, cinammon and white pepper; there are also caramel or toffee notes buried somewhere under the spicy notes thrown off by the Unibroue yeast. Palate is intensely effervescent, with medium body. Overall, not bad for a Unibroue offering. I still think that their yeast has mutated a bit too far off the chart, phenolically, but this is an interesting brew, nonetheless.
Drank this as a throw in cellar clear out at my wedding in 2015. Didnt take notes, but remember not liking it. Probably because its 6+ years past best before date. :-) douglas88 (9570) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAY 12, 2015
750 ml bottle. Pours a dark mahogany color with a medium beige head. A big fruity yeasty nose. Sweet fruity notes, caramel, chocolates, big oxidation which is quite nice, strawberry. Toffee and some light chocolate in the finish. The robust fruity notes are still there 9 years on. This is very good. slowrunner77 (12581) - Reno, Nevada, USA - OCT 15, 2014
"a dry, spicy belgian dubbel...the body is just ok, and the carbonation a little high, but the flavor and finish is pretty nice. overall, an enjoyable brew.

750ml bottle. Not sure why this gets different years for each vintage as I don’t believe the brew changes from year to year. That said, I’m copying and pasting this to each vintage I’ve had due to this factor. Beyond that, every year this comes out it’s worth picking up a bottle. It’s a great dark fruited and spiced out Belgian style, something like a dubbel, yet stronger. Can’t beat it for the price! mcberko (18557) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 26, 2012
750mL bottle, pours a dark brown / near-black with a medium beige head. Aroma is full of spices, some dark fruits, and brown sugar. Flavour is full of spices, dark fruits, some caramel malts and some licorice notes. Lively carbonation that accentuates the complexity very well. The age has done wonders to this and there is no hint of oxidation. Great stuff.

Bottle shared by Maniac at the Irish Chanukah tasting. Pours dark brown with garnet highlights, small white head, medium retention with light lacing. Aroma is caramel, cookie, and nutty malt, spices of nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger with earthy and cellar notes. Flavor is malt dominant, light spicy alcohol, spices and Belgian yeast with light hops and bitterness with a sweet finish. Full body, medium warmth and carbonation. My bottles of this (enjoyed annually since the release) have all been gushers. They pour a deep dank brown with a huge off off white head. Nose and taste are a nice blend of spices and dark sweet malts, caramel, raisins, figs. If this beer wasn’t do overcarbonated I think I would give it a 4+ Marsiblursi (3076) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - JAN 15, 2012
(Bottle) Pours dark brown. The aroma is yeast spicy with notes of nutmeg, ginger and white pepper. Light roasty and lemon sour undertones. Hints of dark fruits, dark berries (cherries), earth, liquorice, violet, anise and grassy hops. The flavour is medium sweet, light bitter and light acidic. Spicy in the taste as well with notes of anise, ginger, white pepper and nutmeg. Subtle fruity. The mouthfeel is velvety with a sparkling yet soft carbonation. Quite yeasty and light roasted with touch of grassy hops. Medium bodied. gunnfryd (15176) - Kristiansand, NORWAY - MAY 21, 2011

Strong pine with sherry and honey. Very similar to 2009, but with a stronger pine flavor.
