Poured from bottle into a chalice glass
Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown chestnut color with a big billowy cream colored head. The big billowy head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a fantastic level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell- The aroma was slightly roasted and rather fruity. A good dose of a slightly grainy but roasted and toasted malt smell along with darker fruits of cherry and raisin are there. Along with these aromas are some smells of yeast and a little bit of a spicy smells and some hot rum like aromas are there, producing a nice Belgian strong dark aroma.
Taste – The taste begins with a slightly roasted and malty flavor with the darker fruit cherry that was detected in the nose. Some yeasty and spice flavors of a clove and nutmeg later come to the tongue as well as some other flavors of more raisin and fig. As the flavor advances further to the end, the malty flavors dwindle further as the darker fruit and spice seem to increase, combining with a little bit of a boozy rum flavor, which all in all end up leaving a rather nice Belgian dark smell to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side for a Belgian strong dark of 9 % adv. with a carbonation level that is on the slightly higher side. The combo of body and carbonation are nice for styles of the brew as well as in keeping the brew very drinkable but not too drinkable in light of the abv. and the boozy flavors.
Overall – A rather nice drinking Belgian strong dark ale with some nice fruity flavors as well as a good level of roast and booze.

"Similar to year’s past, this is a nice spice forward dark BSA. Aroma of ripe dark fruit and loads of spice. Body is prickly and the finish is dry. Very spicy (almost to a fault) on the palate. This will be really nice at the back end of winter after it settles down a bit, but it’s still good now alexsdad06 (10434) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAY 3, 2014
Bottle shared by ?? at a local tasting. Pours a darker reddish amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have big caramel malt, ripe fruits, fig, raisins, spices, yeast, good body and mouthfeel. These are some of the best values each and every year. bytemesis (8438) - Sunnyvale, California, USA - APR 26, 2014
Bottle from TJ’s. Pours deep ruby black with a medium creamy beige head that dissipates slowly and laces well. Aroma is dark fruits, spices, toffee, some cocoa, figs. Flavor follows, medium sweet, little bitterness, spicy and fruity, with a lingering spicy finish. Getting a bit of clove or anise in there. Medium body, high carbonation. Quite a nice Belgian Ale, actually. rdixon77 (2835) - Georgia, USA - MAR 22, 2014
Always great for the price. Super dark pour. Big dark fruits and yeast in the nose. Great fruity and strong dubbel taste. Slightly roasty. Big spicy mouthfeel. Never a bad choice.

750ml bottle. Not sure why this gets different years for each vintage as I don’t believe the brew changes from year to year. That said, I’m copying and pasting this to each vintage I’ve had due to this factor. Beyond that, every year this comes out it’s worth picking up a bottle. It’s a great dark fruited and spiced out Belgian style, something like a dubbel, yet stronger. Can’t beat it for the price! Boutip (6380) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 2, 2014
Bottle: Poured a dark cloudy brown/burgundy color ale with a very generous foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of candy-like ester with some Belgian-style malt. Taste is also dominated by some candy-like ester with some residual sugar notes with some heavy dark Belgian-style malt. Body is full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very enjoyable beer with good drinkability with nice complexity and beautiful ester. Glad they drop the coriander in this year’s version. maddmatt639 (331) - Pacifica, California, USA - JAN 29, 2014
No retention and no lacing. Smells of sweet malt, spices and raisins. Tastes of sweet malt, dark fruits, slightly doughy and spices. Long finish, slightly bitter.

Pour is a dark, amber brown with a chunky beige head. Aromas of dark fruits, spice and yeast go quite well with the sweet, malty, yeast flavors. At $5 this beer is a steal especially after a year or more. dwm1034 (784) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 1, 2014
Shared bomber with Sherm1016 and others at lake house NYE beer tasting; thanks! Pours a 'regular coke' brown; sweet / malty initial taste; hints of medicinal tastes once in a while; taste moves around. Spicy; a little boozy for my taste; bready; yeasty.
