On draught at the brewery as part of a sampler. Deep copper with a tan head that lingers. A lot of the beers in the sampler have a great appearance and head retention/patterning. This beer was rich and roasty and the highlight of the staples from this brewery. voyageurmike (510) - Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 30, 2014
Watery, better than their stout at least. Poured at the brewpub in a pint glass. Dark reddish brown with moderate tan head. Abrupt bitter finish. Bartender said this was his favorite Trailhead offering, and it is ok when paired with food. Not a beer I would seek out otherwise. Beergeek23322 (2643) - Chester, Virginia, USA - JAN 9, 2014

Tap - good size foamy head, dark brown color, sweet malty aroma and flavor, mild nutty coffee flavor - nothing special gregwilsonstl (2660) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - JUL 1, 2012
Very dark brown. Nice tan head. Surprisingly creamy. Slight roasting. I was expected at least a hint of nut. Pretty bland, but ok Cerealkiller (3) - Florissant, Missouri, USA - JUN 16, 2012 does not count
This beer has a sort of coffee note to it with a nice after taste. It goes really well with their sausage platter. phaleslu (10652) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAY 29, 2012
Draft at the brewpub in a sampler. Pours a dark, clear cola brown color with a small tan head that leaves some trailing lace. Notes of caramel, brown sugar, toasted nuts, syrup, and mild coffee. Really sweet for a brown ale. Light-medium bodied, with a syrupy mouthfeel and mild carbonation. Just too sweet for me. satan165 (1020) - River Grove, Illinois, USA - JUL 24, 2011
aroma is good fudge tempered with peanuts or other salty ilk as backdrop. appearance is opaque RIS levels with reducing head, leaving film and substantial ring. flavor is metallic fudge up front followed by more peanuts and fleeting notes of dark raspberries or grapes. the third try for this brewer finally gives a drinkable mouthfeel - low carb but full enough, especially for style to reduce gag reflex.
