COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pow Pow is hazy, pale orange in appearance and emits aromatic qualities of orange zest, apricots and honeysuckle on the nose. Bright flavors of citrus pith, along with soft notes of melon are accentuated with a lasting and balanced bitterness.

The idea for Pow Pow was born when 2 very passionate individuals joined forces during the epic 2016 beer festival Beer Camp Across America. Devil’s Backbone, Dogfish Head, Sierra Nevada, Stoudt’s, Lawson’s Finest Liquids, and Trillium collaborated to create one of the festival’s signature beer Pat-Rye-Ot, a pale ale that pays tribute to America’s original homebrewers. During the process two brewers in particular were fascinated by a new hop product that was used in Pat-Rye-Ot. The product: lupulin powder. The fascinated brewers: Sean Lawson and JC Tetreault.

Lupulin powder is essentially a super concentrated hop product made by flash freezing and then shattering intact hop flowers. In early November, the team experimented with different ways of utilizing the lupulin powder in both the whirlpool and during the dry hop, taking into account beer and wort temperatures, contact time, lupulin powder temperatures, and consistency of the powder.

ABV: 7.7.%

MALT: American 2-Row Barley, English Pale Ale Malt, Flaked Wheat, White Wheat Malt, C-15, Dextrine, Dextrose

HOPS: Citra Lupulin Powder, Simcoe Lupulin Powder, Mosaic Lupulin Powder, Galaxy, Nelson

Thought I was getting a Trillium brew but I see it’s a collaboration with Lawson’s Finest. I adjusted my expectations downward as a result. Pours hazy yellow, little lead. Aroma of grapefruit. Taste is grapefruit with mild bitterness. Dry moutfheel. Not as creamy as it looks. Beer is good for a collaboration, and just plain good. Nothing exceptional though.

Draught at Row 34, 12/12 and the brewery, 12/21/16.
A very hazy, beeswax-golden beer with a small white head atop showing moderate retention.
The nose is incredibly fruity and juicy, showing off the Mosaic, Galaxy and Nelson prominently with notes of lime juice, cherry, melon, ripe nectarine and pommelo. Malt/wheat provides a solid base but does not bother the hops. No resin character and quite clean and very aromatic.
In the mouth it has a solid bitterness but the juiciness and soft malt and wheat texture keeps it balanced. Dry and quite drinkable with tight carbonation and no alcohol or flaw. Having it nine days later on draught, it came across a bit muddled and I found some odd cheesy elements with not nearly the brightness and juiciness. Seems hard to believe the beer would have begun to fall off after such a short period of time, but I’m not sure what accounted for it. Rating is an average of the two samples.

Thanks to Priorl & Mathieu87 for procurement & organization. Can sampled @ “Samson & Geert Tasting 21.01.17”. Canned 12.12.16. Very hazy going to murky orange. Nose is low ceese dank apricot hops, very dank fresh hop concentrate with huge dank stone fruit qualities. Not too different from other Trillium beers but given the quality of the beers, that doesn’t really mater. Taste is cheesy intense hops, mellow stone fruit, faint mandarin, dank largely & mainly cheesy, corn bread, fluffy, finish carries vaguely sweet cheesy hops, works really well. Hugely creamy bodied, fluffy bread & cheese. Very nice, seems like lupulin powder works every bit as well as the real thing.

Tasted on 1/14/17 from a 16oz can, big thanks to Alex for sending. Pours cloudy, but bright orange with an average white head that slowly recedes to sticky, average lace. The nose is very bright citrus, orange zest, lemon peel, and grapefruit rind, with a light hint of tropical and pitted fruit underlying, very floral, and just a little dank. The flavor is the same very bright citrus with an additional green mango note, light apricot, still very floral and dank, with just enough bitterness to keep things interesting. The body is medium plus with average carbonation, and a long very floral, tropical, and lightly bitter citrus peel finish.

Enjoyed a growler of this on Christmas Day. It’s hazy color looks like OJ and it tastes like a hoppy version of the morning beverage.
