First brewed 1996; claimed to be based on a recipe from 1679 which used wheat, oat and barley.
Tripel Karmeliet is a very refined and complex golden-to-bronze brew with a fantastic creamy head. These characteristics derive not only from the grains used but also from restrained hopping with Styrians and the fruity nature (banana and vanilla) of the house yeast. Aroma has hints of vanilla mixed with citrus aromas. Tripel Karmeliet has not only the lightness and freshness of wheat, but also the creaminess of oats together with a spicy lemony almost quinine dryness.

Thick cloudy golden color with dense storming activity. Extra foamy beige 2-3 finger head in a goblet, lasting around 10-15 minutes, with thick legs. Flavors of sweet grains, fresh lemon, apples, pears, floral spices. Bready sweetness with sharp citrus. Slick and smooth full body with almost champagne like carbonation. Strong finish, a little dry and vinous belgian yeast, with lingering coriander, clove, sweet fruits, wheaty malts, and peppercorn. Good freshness, but a little metallic, still providing lots of satisfaction and quite filling. Very flavorful with some nice intensity and balance. Overall excellent quality craft.

Aroma has lemon and green forest. Taste is wheat and peach. Palate has resinous hops and sour lemon. Overall this is one of my favourite trappists.

A bottle from the Cafe Bastille near Tai Power Building, drunk at home. Aroma: plenty of wheat in there, sweet, flowery. Appearance: clear, pale amber; head is minimal, but sticks around. Palate: medium-bodied, rather creamy, soft carbonation. Finishes long, pleasing balance of astringency and sweetness. Taste: extremely well-balanced, lemony and floral but not oversweet. The alcohol lurks in the shadows. Not my favourite type, but a very well-crafted beverage.

Aroma: slightly floral, but mostly citrus hops. Appearance: cloudy yellow with a lovely white thick head. Taste: slightly spiced with ginger with sweet malts followed by slight bitterness. One of the best common Belgians in my opinions.

I bought this bottle in Paris, in a G7 supermarket. I drank it yesterday with a delicious meal. In my point of view, it is a really nice product. The body is yellow, creamy and troubled, thin and white foam, sparkling, relative high carbonation. The taste is perfect for a tripel, perfect side of malt, giving a side of fruits, banana, cloves, apricot, some hop and nice mix with the alcohol, wheat, perfect.

Conclusie: klasse!
