Draft at the brewery. Pours a dark brown with a small tan head that settles into an uneven ring and some trailing lace. I'm reading the spices in here and I don't get how anise isn't one, because if I were pressed to call them out individually, that'd be my first selection. Anise is in here, it seems to me. Clove, cinnamon, allspice, ginger, nutmeg, dark chocolate, caramel, brown sugar, tobacco, dark fruits, and wood. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a really sweet, slightly spicy/botanical mouthfeel. Rich stuff. DrSilverworm (10000) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - JAN 8, 2018
1/22/2017 -- from notes: 12oz bottle, split with caterwaul and Steph. Orange peel evident up front, chocolate, and worty malt. Brandy barrel is subtle but there. Moderate-plus sweet, mild heat. Nice one to try but doesn't feel like a cohesive blend. gizmo_ber (221) - Steinwenden, GERMANY - DEC 31, 2017
Very nuanced and sweet, I'd almost mistake this for a Belgian quad if it weren't so sweet. Lots of fruit and spice. Very delicious. JaBier (8490) - Capital City, Ohio, USA - JUL 3, 2017
Bottle. Pours a clear chestnut brown with a thick tan head. Nose of cinnamon, brandy, bourbon, chocolate, caramel, toffee and walnut. Malt and chocolate flavor with brandy and vanilla accents before a hazelnut and cinnamon finish. bhensonb (16250) - Woodland, California, USA - JUN 19, 2017
Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours dark brown with a creamy beige/tan head. Aroma of chocolate, sweet dark malt, whisky and spice. Med body or so. Flavor is chocolate, whisky, slightly burning ginger, and mixed spices. Can’t parse the spices. A little heat, but it’s not bothersome. Trying hard for wood, but the complex and fairly strong flavors seem to block the wood for me. This is really flavorful and good ale. Amazing, actually.

Bottle from alexsdad06. Pours dark brown with a modest tan head and a chocolate and spice aroma. There is a rich full-bodied chocolate malt flavor with a lot of ginger and some other tasty spices. Warm alcohol finish. This is a very well-constructed brew. JStax (7453) - Devola/Marietta, Ohio, USA - MAY 21, 2017
12 ounce bottle poured into a snifter. The beer is a clear amber to brown with a khaki head of foam. The aroma has a strong spice component with a rich cake-like aspect. Sweet and boozy. The barrel complements the other aspects of the beer well. Big body and medium carbonation. djd07 (16512) - Houston, Texas, USA - APR 6, 2017
Bottle thanks to Brian. Pours a hazy copper with medium small beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong roast, ginger, spice, bourbon. Medium body, cocoa, bourbon, wood, ginger, spice, good. alexsdad06 (11561) - West Chester, Ohio, USA - DEC 28, 2016
Draft at Listermann. Pours a dark cola brown color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have sweet malts, spices, molasses, syrupy, nutmeg, allspice, brandy more than bourbon, light chocolate, red and dark fruit character, some viscosity. drsordr (2984) - Loveland, Ohio, USA - DEC 27, 2016
Bottle shared by alexsdad06 pour opaque cola brown with moderate ecru head. Nose brandy aged Belgian strong. Caramel, red fruit, brandy and light spice. Taste, sweeter up front, red fruit, vanilla and caramel later. Syrup and molasses. More brandy than bourbon in the flavors. Thicker mouth feel.
