Aroma has fruity hops, grapefruit, some licorice and resiny tones. Flavour has resin, grapefruit, nettles, licorice, hints of ash and minerals. Also salmiac. Ashy finish. Most likely the first black IPA I am having from cask. Not bad, but could be less ashy. Also, this gets some bush leaves & vegetable tones after some sips.
Cask. Dark chestnut brown with a small tan head. Dry wood, bark, forest, pine, light dark/rye bread, brown sugar. Medium body, little sweetness, medium bitter. Light dry and bitter hoppy finish. Dark brown. Toasty nose with dark sugars and a little bit of grapefruity hop. Mouthfeel is a bit slick. Taste is a little dark malt sweetness, a little bit of hop fruitiness. Fairly light example, fits with the English context but is less effective overall than the bigger interpretations of the concept.

Cask Pint at Wibbas Down (JDW), Wimbledon, London in Sept 2013 - Black in colour. Very Malty; very burnt malts; anything else is totally overwhelmed by the dominant burnt taste. Very Fruity; very citrus grapefruit. Hoppy; bitter piney hops. Very burnt malts meet bitter citrus fruity hops. Too burnt; this totally dominates the taste. Cask at the Anchor, Digbeth, Birmingham. Poured a deep mahogany colour with a bubbly light tan head. The aroma is rich malt and liqourice. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with a liqourice, treacle, citrus fruit, spicy hop palate. A black IPA? I guess it’s getting there but it’s very much an Anglicised version. Woh, such a an English aroma. Nice porter roast, but some vorpalberries too. Nice burnt roast in the retronasals. Palate pleasantly slithy. Nice spicy roasty combo. Good balance, high drinkability. Finish later fills out with a whole range of roasts and spices.
