All the attributes of an American India Pale Ale but its black. Do your eyes deceive you? Have you fallen down the rabbit hole? Take in the fresh pine hop aroma then savour the complex malt palate typical of an IPA but then come the subtle hints of dark chocolate and liquorice to give the game away. This is not a heavy beer but smooth and incredibly drinkable, a new beer style worthy of praise. Drink me!

The hand-pulled pint in The White Hart Shifnal on the 21 Aug 2013 looked very interesting: black and moody, with a full beige coloured creamy head that gave of some impressive lacing. Roasted/toasted malt aroma and taste: some hints of chocolate and semi-sweet caramel melting over a wood fire. Not as rich or creamy as it first looks indicated, but this is still a fine beer and the body suited the alcohol level and overall flavours. Different and pleasant from start to finish.

(Cask at Kittys, 20130821) The beer poured almost black and clear. Its head was long lasting, medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had pine, grass and roasted malts mildly in the background. Palate was medium bodied with low carbonation. Flavours were pine, burnt malts, grass, liquorice, ash and bitterness. Afteraste was hoppy, burnt and bitter. The burnt malts were too much present in the taste but otherwise the beer was really good

Fat @ Akkurat, Stockholm. Halleluja!

(Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm) Dark brown colour, almost black, with foamy beige head. Roasted, malty nose with coffee, chocolate, dark fruit and pine needles. Malty, roasted taste with notes of dark chocolate, dark fruit, dark rye bread and a generous piney bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Very nice.

Gravity dispense at Ascot Racecourse Beer Festival 2012 - 06/10/12. Dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head. Big pine nose allied to bitter grapefruit and hops. Hoppy piney taste with a little dark roast malt and chocolate in the background. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation leading to a dry finish. Another great black IPA from a British brewer!

Cask @ Akkurat. Pours dark brown, almost black, with a very small head that doesnt leave any trace worth mentioning on the glass. Smell is slightly sweet, fruity and malty with dark bread, toasted malts, peaches, pineapple, freshly cut grass, earl gray tea and hints of coffee. Taste is tiny sweet, tiny sour and bitter with roasted malts, tropical fruit juice, grapes, pine, grapefruit juice, wood, pine, soap and liquorice root. Mouthfeel is smooth, tiny watery, flat and light to medium bodied. Finish is bitter and fruity with roasted malts, tropical fruits, pine, dark bread, moist soil, wood, lemon zest and orange zest.
