All the attributes of an American India Pale Ale but its black. Do your eyes deceive you? Have you fallen down the rabbit hole? Take in the fresh pine hop aroma then savour the complex malt palate typical of an IPA but then come the subtle hints of dark chocolate and liquorice to give the game away. This is not a heavy beer but smooth and incredibly drinkable, a new beer style worthy of praise. Drink me!

Gravity dispense at Ascot Racecourse Beer Festival 2012 - 06/10/12. Dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head. Big pine nose allied to bitter grapefruit and hops. Hoppy piney taste with a little dark roast malt and chocolate in the background. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation leading to a dry finish. Another great black IPA from a British brewer!

Dark brown. Toasty nose with dark sugars and a little bit of grapefruity hop. Mouthfeel is a bit slick. Taste is a little dark malt sweetness, a little bit of hop fruitiness. Fairly light example, fits with the English context but is less effective overall than the bigger interpretations of the concept.

Woh, such a an English aroma. Nice porter roast, but some vorpalberries too. Nice burnt roast in the retronasals. Palate pleasantly slithy. Nice spicy roasty combo. Good balance, high drinkability. Finish later fills out with a whole range of roasts and spices.

Cask conditioned at Moreton in Marsh Beer Fest 12. Very dark brown with cream head. The initial flavours are of rich roasty dry malts, some liquorice, some husky coffee hints then zinging in from left field comes the hops, twangy tangerine, spruce needles, loganberry, challenging the malts to a fight. An absolute belter in my book and worthy of a high mark from me.

Cask at the Anchor, Digbeth, Birmingham. Poured a deep mahogany colour with a bubbly light tan head. The aroma is rich malt and liqourice. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with a liqourice, treacle, citrus fruit, spicy hop palate. A black IPA? I guess its getting there but its very much an Anglicised version.

Cask @Old Bank, Turku
Aroma has fruity hops, grapefruit, some licorice and resiny tones. Flavour has resin, grapefruit, nettles, licorice, hints of ash and minerals. Also salmiac. Ashy finish. Most likely the first black IPA I am having from cask. Not bad, but could be less ashy. Also, this gets some bush leaves & vegetable tones after some sips.
