(On tap) Completely opaque black with a beige head. Burned and somewhat smoked aroma. Has a fairly full body with notes of salty licorice. A dry and bitter finish from the malts. Quite decent. 200307 brokensail (16449) - Dublin, California, USA - JAN 17, 2011
A: The pour is essentially black with a finger of creamy, tan colored head.
S: The nose is very roasty with plenty of coffee aromas to it. There’s some dark cocoa powder that is somewhat bitter and maybe even a touch of nuttiness to it.
T: A mild bitterness, some moderate chocolate notes, and a very heavy roasted malt component. There’s a touch of acidity to it, but it works out alright. Lots of coffee flavor, too.
M: The body is medium and the carbonation is smooth and low to medium.
D: I’d definitely have this beer again. Smooth and easy to drink, like the style should be. bhensonb (15208) - Woodland, California, USA - NOV 11, 2007
Draft at the brewpub (7.6%). Aroma of dark toasted malt. Color is opaque black with a low tan head. Medium body with very mild carbonation. Quite smooth. The flavor is dark toasted, but not burnt, malt with a small sour undernote. There is bitter, but it is obscured by the toasted character. Very good stout.
