Old time brewers in Germany made a malty, high gravity beer in March (Maerzen) which they consumed with great ceremony in the fall. The coincidence of a royal betrothal in the autumn of 1810 gave Bavarian beer lovers ample justification for the two-week long bash known as Oktoberfest.

On tap at KSBF ’08. Clear amber with a big foamy head. Spicy noble hops were very present in both the nose and flavor. Some bready malt present as well. Decent but a good example why more hops aren’t always needed.

Draft pint at the Philadelphia brewpub. Reddish amber with a thin gluey head. Classical middle-of-the-road caramel malt. Medium hop tingle. Nicely balanced, but just an average O-fest. (#3183, 11/8/2007)

Real good throw back style beer. Like your grandfather drank. Nice on a cold November afternoon.

On tap at their New Hope brewpub. Pours crystal clear amber with a moderate off-white head that was gone after a few sips. Pleasant aroma of caramel and malt. Flavor was a bit light with caramel and malt both noted. A bit thin in the mouthfeel. This beer is a bit lighter than most marzens I have sampled thus far.

growler from New Hope location. Nice clear amber in color with a small to medium sized off white head. Aroma is toasted and munich malts, light caramel and floral hops. Taste is well balanced between toasted malts, caramel and light floral hops. Well attenuated, somewhat dry. Light to medium bodied. well done.

Draft in New Hope. Not a bad beer by any standards but I think most brewers try to copy somebody else’s Oktoberfests because this tastes like everyone elses Oktoberfest. Decent aroma and body but a little odd mouthfeel. Pretty smooth.

Beerdedone (3480) - Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 1, 2006
On draft at the Newtown Brewfest with Stegosaurus and The Mad Indian. Pours amber with an off-white head. Aroma of caramel, hops, and citrus. The flavor is caramel, slightly spiced, and finishes mildly bitter.

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2010 Newtown Brewfest 06. Pours a nice clear orangey amber with a nice fluffy white head and good lace. Aroma is toasted and munich malts, bready lightly nutty and has a nice clean assertive noble hop character. Clean bready and malty flavor with full toasted malts, light caramel sweetness cut with an herbal hop bitterness in the finish. This was a good Oktoberfest.

Amber color with heavy foam. Aroma is typical Marzen with plenty of maltiness. Taste is pretty good for an Oktoberfest, but not exceptional.

MadIndian (2743) - Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 21, 2006
Sampled with Stegosaurus and beerded_one at Newtown brewfest. Weak body and taste for an octoberfest. I was dissapointed.
