Long toasty days, cool breezy nights and a splash of magic provide the inspiration for the Tröegs brothers’ dreamiest creation — Dreamweaver Wheat. Combining wheat with Munich and Pilsner malts, German Northern Brewer hops, open-top fermentation and a yeast strain that imparts hints of pepper, clove and banana, Dreamweaver Wheat is an unfiltered blast of spicy, mouthwatering joy.

2015-08-26. Hazy dark pastel yellow, nice white head fades. 3+ Aroma is pleasantly estery, light cloves, banana, wheat and yeast. Flavour is similar, nice banana esters with a kiss of cloves, muted yeast and white. Smooth average plus bodied palate, moderate carbonation. Simple classic take on a Hefe. Lovely. Bottle from Troegs, Hershey, PA.

Hefeweizen is one of my all-time favorite styles of beer, though it seems to be something of a rarity among American brewers. I’m not sure why, especially considering “session beer” is all the rage these days. Not too many mainstream American production breweries can make a hefe on par with the Germans, though I’d say Tröegs Dream Weaver Wheat is one of the better examples I’ve had. It’s completely to-spec on all categories as well as being delectable, refreshing, priced right and fun to drink.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a weizen glass. It was bottled on 5/15/15 and cost $2.60 ($0.22 per ounce).

Appearance: An aggressive pour fills up my tall wheat glass to the rim with foam. It settles quickly to leave a lovely four inches of froth. It leaves plenty of lacing on the glass after each swig and never completely dissipates.

Smell: Traditional yeast esters of banana and clove as well as some bubblegum. Quite sweet-smelling.

Taste: I’ve drank a lot of hefeweizen over the years and I think my palate is honed enough by now to discern between just plain okay brews and ones that are really great. This falls into the latter category by virtue of the fact that not only is not mild (as many American versions tend to be), it’s actually quite robust and complex. I really dig the light sweetness of bananas right off the rip. I get a bit of orange flavor as well, but it’s in no way acidic or tart like the juice. A bit of spicy bitterness through the middle which lingers throughout the back end. A bit clovey, a bit peppery so as to offer some balance to the basic sweetness of the palette but not so much as to overshadow it.

Drinkability: Another thing that separates a great hefe from a good hefe is its ability to be fully flavored without a heavy body. Tröegs Dream Weaver Wheat is only 4.8% ABV, which is a little light for the style, but has just as much body as heavier version. The mouthfeel is quite comfortable with a fullness that envelopes the tongue, but is still fluffy and soft. Every swig is equally refreshing. This beer absolutely should be available in cans because it lends itself to portability and sessioning perfectly.

RATING: 9/10

355ml bottle [I’m deeply indebted to David for this one]. Hazy golden colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Fruity, wheaty, slightly herbal and yeasty spicy aroma, notes of banana, some clove, cautious hints of mustard and tarragon, a touch of orange. Taste is rather dry, wheaty, minimally tart, slightly spicy yeasty, minimally bready and strawy, a lemon and orange touch, cautious banana basis; gentle, minimally too flat carbonation. Excellent handling and wonderful balance of sweet, tart, and dry components.

I poured it from the bottle into a pint glass. It pours a hazy golden color with a nice white head and lacing. The aroma is bread and spice. The taste is wheat, spice, and orange. The palate is very nicely carbonated. This is very good.

BOD 3/2/15. Pours a slightly hazy golden. Outstanding head volume, normal lacing and retention. World class nose of clove, light banana and hints of pepper over a base of wheat and pale malt. Heavy light body, which is normal for the style, with a very smooth texture. Superbly carbonated with a rich prickly effervescence from the middle on. The flavor profile is borderline world class due to a slight lack of complexity. While intense and well balanced, it is clove focused and other hefeweizen aspects are rather subdued, such as banana. It begins with clove phenolics and they remain through the finish. The middle brings very slight banana, a nice grainy wheat aspect and only a hint of hops - no real bitterness to speak of. The finish is a slowwwww fade of the clove phenolic.
