Glad to be the first Québécois to rate, maybe even try that one. Outside Pennsylvania, it seems hard to find; the owner got it out of the backstore because my brother was buying 250$ worth of beer to bring to me, The owner asked him not to tell where he got it and not to come again to get some more). 9,99$ for 22 oz. This is Heaven in a bottle. Hop tingling, very light texture, high carbonation, there seems to be something watery but in the best possible way (maybe it was very fresh), notes of fruits like orange and surely others because it is an incredibly complex brew. Notes of sweetness from the malt but the fruity hops come over and over again in the taste and aftertaste. I am totally overwhelmed by that brew. I’d buy cases of that if I could find it. THOUGHTS: I tried this on tap at the Good Dog Bar during Philly Beer Week and it was great. I could only hope the bottled version was as good. Wow was it ever. It’s like Nugget Nectar and Dead Reckoning Porter had a baby and baby grew up to be more of a success than either of its already successful parents, due to to their love and sacrifice. Now that they’re bottling and naming a former scratch beer, I’m hoping one day I’ll be able to buy a bottle of Naked Elf. This, though, was one wicked barley wine that was surprisingly easy to drink. It didn’t really even seem like a barley wine to me. It seemed almost like a new thing. Like a dark double IPA. It was like eating grapefruit for breakfast and washing it down with a caramel mocha coffee.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a dark brownish red that was mahogany in the light with an average to large, off-white to khaki head that mostly diminished, but kept a nice sheet that blanketed the sides of the glass with excellent lacing. The aroma was moderate molasses, caramel, mild coffee and light roasted malt, moderate to heavy grapefruit and orange (leaning slightly more to the orange) hops, maple syrup, and slight cherry. When it warmed more there was an ever so slight Band-aid smell that may have just been part of the resinous hops that emerged at that point. There was something slightly off, but only ever so slightly. I forgave this and still think overall this beer is a 20, because if it didn’t get as warm as it did, I never would have known about it. The initial flavor was rather sweet, slightly sour, acidic and even more slightly bitter; while the finish was sweet and bitter with an average to long duration. There was grape fruit, orange, chocolate, coffee, caramel malt, brown sugar, maybe some toffee, a little pine and chocolate syrup. Great balance. The full body was creamy with sort of soft carbonation and a light astringent, light alcoholic and ever so slightly chalky finish. It made me want wanna keep sippin’. UPDATED: APR 11, 2009 22oz Bottle. Oozed out of the bottle a beautiful turbid earthy garnet, with amber highlights and a soft creamy tan head that provided remarkable uber lacing. Wonderfully redolent of high alpha hops: pine needles, grapefruit, orange; then caramel-chocolate, raisin, and fig with hints of roast malt. Reminiscent of Nugget Nectar with an intense malting. Tasted spectacular. Fresh pine needles, pink grapefruit, orange - perhaps mandarin - then caramel, cocoa, raisin, fig, slight licorice-toffee spiciness. It’s palate exacerbates the jubilance of the experience. Viscous and soft, full but not heavy, bitter but not cloying, intense but simple, warming but not burning. Amazing. This beer pours a dark amber color with a reddish-brownish hue with a huge beige head. The head is soft and creamy and leaves lots of lacing around the glass. The aroma is extremely inviting, with notes of flowery hops, pine, citrus and yeast. The flavors are amazingly and dangerously delicious, with a big hoppy character and a balanced malty profile. This beer is more like an IIPA than a barleywine. It’s extremely hoppy, bitter and dry with a big malty balance. The Flying Mouflan is so well-rounded, with a great bitter hoppiness with grass, grapefruit, orange and grassy flavors along with a rich tone of earth, caramel and toffee. The finish is quite hoppy and dry but with a delicious and complex malty tone. This beer really has it all. Tröegs Flying Mouflan is a clear, reddish brown ale with a thick, dense, bubbly, oily beige head that has outstanding retention. The aroma is slightly sweet and quite hoppy. It smells floral, with notes of orange, grass, caramel and bubble gum. It has a super smooth full body with a clean dry finish. It tastes bold and well balanced. It’s slightly sweet with caramel and has a roastiness, like chocolate and coffee. There are notes of orange peel and black pepper. Juniper and wood resin provide the taste for the finish. This is super enjoyable. There are lots of different flavors going on, but they never interfere with each other. This is a world class ale, the kind I run across once or twice a year. I never even thought of it as a barleywine. I was just kind of thinking of it as an American strong ale while I was drinking it. Now that I think about it, I guess it could be a barleywine. Either way, it’s epic!

UPDATED: APR 16, 2009 Wow. I didn’t realize that this was Scratch 4 until recently. The pour is turbid, muddy deep brownish with 1-finger of khaki head. The aroma is amazingly complex, giving notes of heavy hops, tropical fruit, funky feety Simcoe hops, yeasty hints, caramel malt, figs, and mild cognac. The palate is rich, complex, throwing different things at the palate with every sip. Among the flavors Inoted were caramel malt, huge feety hops, tropical fruit, blackberry, prune, cognac, and figs. The hops don’t overtake the malt, with both components being huge and balancing each other well, and the alcohol is very well hidden. I need more of this. Bottle. Very dark ruddy brown with a gigantic top of rocky foam. The aroma wafts to my nostrils from over a foot away, rich with malty goodness. Up close it has a kick-ass sweet, sugary essence. This drinks like liquid candy, sweet like a breakfast roll, warming like a cozy blanket. This is perhaps the best beer I’ve had in a year. Pours a deep, dark amber color with a beige head. Wow, this aroma is heaven in a bottle. It’s killer!!! The aroma is of toffee, citrus, pine, caramel, and lovely simcoe hops. Perhaps there’s also suggestions of mango, molasses, brandy, and creme brulee’s crunchy top. Palate is full and rich. This was amazing!!! Thanks adrian910ss.
