3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle; It pours a medium amber w/ a lasting, medium sized off white head of smaller bubbles. Aroma is a wonderful floral and lemon citrusy hop at first, then it gets some hints of orange before it warms up. Also some hints of perfumey, piney, hairspray alcohol, but it’s strange given the lower ABV. Some lightly toasted malts, hints of caramel, and low fruitiness. Very well balanced w/a distinct caramel flavor up front, then becomes lightly citrusy hoppy after. Toasty malt comes in third w/ the dry finish and floral hop flavored aftertaste. Dry m/f, but not astringent, lower carb., & lighter medium body. Overall a very enjoyable beer for an amber ale. Very pleasant hop characteristics balanced by a caramel malt flavor. Very yummy!

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: AUG 17, 2009 Sweet and refreshing although not as hoppy as I would have liked. Got what I wanted from the dopplebock from Troegs.
Rerate: much better than I remember. Sweet malt profile is balance by a pleasant bitterness. Good stuff. Not sure why I thought this was a bock.

Bottle. Medium amber in color with a small white head. Some lacing. Fresh citrus hop and caramel malt aroma. Medium bodied. Crisp hop flavors throughout with a nice malt balance. Really one of the better amber ales I have had.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Deep amber color. Small white foamy head. Aroma is hoppy (floral and grapefruity), and malt sweet. A medium bodied amber. Malts are fruity and sweet. Hops are grapefruity and floral. The hop flavors shows up a little late in the taste. It’s a little malty to start and hoppy to finish. Nice balance transformation. Full flavored amber; wish all amber had this much flavor. Nice beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Thanks Bert/Slob. 12oz bottle. NB worthy glass. 53.5°. Reddish orange with 1/4" in off white headwhich subsides quickly leaving a ring of foam around the glass. Nice lacing. Grapefruit hops aroma some malt sweetness. Taste jumps right into hops, first floral, then grapefruit and citrus later. The taste is pretty well bitter throughout with a long lasting bitter finish. After getting halfway through the beer, I adjusted to the hops and a very slight malt backbone appeared with a touch of sweetness to offset the bitterness. Good beer, and I love hoppiness in beer, but it could use a bit more balance. This is really more of an american IPA than an amber ale.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
This is one of my favorite styles and I was greatly disappointed by the beer. Great dark rich amber color, but no head. Surprisingly little malt for an amber, surprisingly little body. Lots of good hoppy bitterness, and an interesting sweet caramel finish underlying the bitterness. A disconcerting sour taste was present as well. But, despite this different flavors, my principal impression was — nothing. Too thin in the mouth. Too little intensity. No integration or integrity, just odd disconnected sensations, in a vast empty hole in beer space. OK, if I wanted citrus hoppyness in an amber I would be very happy to have another HopDevil. This amber, though, was drain pour.
