JavaHead Stout, first released as Scratch 15, contains a blend of locally roasted espresso and Kenyan coffee beans by St. Thomas Roasters in Linglestown, PA.

This recipe is based off of our original 2005 oatmeal stout. After the boil the hot wort passes through our hopback vessel packed full of whole leaf hops and a bed of coffee beans - akin to a French press - intensifying the coffee nose and releasing hints of coffee flavor. The result is a lush oatmeal mouthfeel balanced with cocoa, roast and subtle coffee flavors.

Darwenus' rating

   AROMA 7/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 6/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 16/20

The body is a milk chocolate brown, and it pours with a medium. creamy looking head. The aroma is rich and sweet, but not too much so. There’s kind of a latte smell to it that I liked, but it might have been what my mind decided to detect, given that there’s coffee in the brew. The flavor is nice, kind of a bitter coffee bite up front and then a very smooth finish. It’s not a complex beer, it kind of plays it’s whole hand in the first few sips, but it is a winning hand.

12oz bottle Pour is VERY dark, head is thin but persistent. Aromas of vanilla cocoa dominate, Bittersweet chocolate with a slight spicy aftertaste. Above average but not outstanding in my opinion. Worth a try.

12 ouounce bottle. Pours dark brown with a large rocky tan head. Subtle roasted malt nose hints at chocolate and coffee. Flavor is espresso and bittersweet chocolate. Slightly earthy with sweet notes. Full bodied with a chewy mouthfeel. Finishes with bitter, spicy hops. A very good coffee stout.

Geruch nach Schokolade, Beeren und Rotwein sowie Tabak. Geschmack leider nicht so voll und rund sondern eher kantig, sehr bitter und kratzig im Abgang.

12 ounce bottle. Hints of chocolate and coffee for the aroma. Pitch black in color. Sweet, taste of bitter chocolate. Smooth on the palate with a little after bite. Overall this is above average stout.
