In our recent quest to attain what we feel is the perfect session beer, our team of brewers has been working tirelessly on calculating just the right equation to yield a flawless balance of hop aroma, flavor, bitterness, and malt sweetness. Each new session IPA in our Scratch Beer Series brings us one step closer to reaching “session beer Zen.” Scratch #142 blends a combination of American hops to create an elaborate palate of citrus fruit, pine, dried herbs, and earthy notes. To enhance the aroma, we further dry-hopped with Japanese Sorachi Ace and German Hallertau Blanc to impart a fresh, invigorating fragrance with hints of passionfruit, grape, pineapple, lemongrass, and fresh cut flowers. Thirsty yet?

On draft at Troegs. Pours a hazy orange yellow with a small white head. Bland aroma and bland flavor. Rather dull even if it is a session beer.

Draft at Moriartys. Hazy blonde pour. Somewhat lasting soft off-white foam. Medium-strong floral hop flavors up front that meander to a watery finish. Grapefruit juice. Lemongrass. Not particularly impressed.

My mom buys these Scratch 6-packs for me because she lives in Harrisburg. This one was a big miss. Nice hop aroma but super thin and empty on the flavor. The flavor just drops out after the hops, almost nothing there from the malts. Not interested in trying this again.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. The aroma is slightly oxidized hop notes, pine, citrus. The flavor is hoppy, citrus, fruity, pine. The malts in this beer are muted and gives the beer a one dimensional feel. Thin body doesn’t help the single dimension character.

16 oz draft at Niks Wunderbar. Golden, slightly cloudy. Decent hop flavor, weak malt profile. Delicious but ho-hum, other session IPAs are better.

Hazy light amber appearance with an average size white head and decent lacing. Subtle aroma highlighted by floral hops. Well balanced, moderately bitter flavor offset by biscuit-like maltiness. Thin mouthfeel, medium bodied, with average carbonation, and a short lived finish. Tap (and bottle) from the brewery.

12oz bottle in a tulip. Pours amber/copper with a lacy, off-white head. Aroma of floral and lightly citrusy/fruity plus some grassy hops, some pale malts and a good amount of caramel malts, light dough, and some bread. Flavor the same with a decent blend but a little too malty. Average texture. Definitely feels like it’s way more than a 4.9% beer, but it’s not bad.

On tap at Dog & Bull in Croydon - Excellent! Nice hop flavor and aroma (but not too hoppy). Has a citrus/fruit flavor - apricot? Very good and very drinkable.

Hazy golden color with a small, white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, light citrus, herbal, toasty. Taste of herbal, sorachi, stone fruit, spices, dry finish. Strange, not overly enjoyable.

Disappointing sesson ipa. The flavor is hollow, with weak hopping and little body. Decline to sesson, thank you.
