COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The dark, strong and sweet lager known as Bock has become synonymous with springtime. Although we’re knee deep in winter, we’re always thirsty for a nice Bock beer here at Tröegs. We view this latest Scratch Beer release as the feisty little brother of the Troegenator. Brewed with local PA Dutch malt from our friends at Deer Creek, this traditional Munich style malt produces a deep amber coloration and hints of burnt straw, caramelized nuts, and toasted bread. Light on hop bitterness, Scratch #222 instead provides a good swift kick of dark stone fruit, sweet caramel, and chewy bready notes. Availability: cases, 6-packs, single bottles, draft & growler fills

Bottle. Pours a clear copper body with a one finger fizzy beige head that faded to a wispy film. The nose is quite delicious, some slight caramel and dark wheat with some banana and bready sweetness. The yeastiness is fairly low, but the byproducts on the nose are quite evident. The flavor is quite sweet with some banana bread and light caramel. Very minimal yeastiness, a slight hint of alcohol on the finish. Medium bodied with a slightly chewy mouthfeel and soft fizzy carbonation. Pretty nice Weizenbock, though I could do with a more prominent yeast presence.

Medium body with a sticky texture and soft carbonation. Medium dark sweet flavor with a medium dark sweet finish of moderate duration. Solid drinkable beer.

Draft to taster at Dutch’s. Pours a clear deep golden color with a small off white head. The aroma has sweet malts, honey, and fruit character. The flavor has more lager character than the nose indicated, grainy malts, bready, less sweetness, mild herbal, lightly nutty, decent enough.

Snifter draft at Mex Mex in Pittsburgh. Too sweet and a bit stale. Way overdone on everything. Not for mass consumption.

I don’t think there’s anything singularly outstanding about this beer, but it stands as a better-than-average kind of drink as well. It’s smooth and pours a nice amber color and is a good alternative to some other "safe" beer you may drink just to have one in your hand, but it’s not particularly memorable.
