Scratch 27 begins a new fold in the Scratch series. For the next several batches individual Troegs brewers will create recipes of their choice. First up, The Ticeman had a hankering for a sweet stout, so the Troegs brothers and all the brewers met with Scharffen Berger Chocolate Company engineers to eat ridiculous amounts of cocoa nibs and chocolates over a few pints of beer. This collaboration resulted in the delivery of a special blend of cocoa nibs that were added during the boiling process. In addition to the nibs, lactose was added at the end of the boil to give a little sweetness in the body. The addition of Galena and Simcoe hops lends a subtle fruity balance. After primary fermentation, the beer was aged for three weeks on a blend of cocoa nibs and Ugandan vanilla beans. Dubbed Cocaoabunga, this unfiltered beer has a pleasant cocoa aroma, a subtle sweetness in the mouthfeel, a full-bodied flavor, and hints of vanilla. Enjoy!

Bottle from a trade with machfive55. Pours dark brown/black with brown head that dissipates quickly. Aromas of roasted malts and chocolate. Sweet milk chocolate and roasted malt flavors. Medium to full body with soft carbonaion. A nice sweet stout. Thanks Rich.

A: The pour is a dark brown color with some nice ruby red highlights and a thin tan head. S: The nose is highly chocolatey with some nice roast malt character. Not a lot going on, but quite nice. T: This beer really lives up to its name: there’s tons of sweet, milk chocolate along with some additional milk on top of that. There’s a light roastiness, but the chocolate is really front and center. M: The beer is smooth on the tongue with a medium body, but perhaps a bit thin on the body. D: This was a fantastic beer. While it was sweet, it was not in the sugary, syrupy sense. A real easy drinking sweet stout.

12oz bottle. Pours clear dark brown with a medium tan head. Malty nose with chocolate and a hint of fruit. Chocolate syrup flavor without being too sweet moving to an equally roasty and sweet finish. Very tasty.

12 oz bottle courtesy of steelersfan. Thanks. Pours an opaque dark brown color with a medium tan head that has fair retention. The aroma is soft with chocolate and dust. The flavor is earthy with chocolate, mocha and mildly biter hops. The palate is just a bit thinner than I would prefer, the carbonation is weak. Finishes short with a bit of coffee. Overall: A very sessionable stout, would drink again in a heartbeat.

12 oz bottle from overml01, I think. Pours dark brown with a khaki head. Nose is roast, earth, unsweet cocoa, some anise, spice, and light smoke. Flavor is similar with dry cocoa, anise, earth, and medicinal quality throughout. Finish lingers with dry cocoa and anise. Medium body and decent overall.

12oz bottle. Pours very deep brown, topped with a large mocha colored head. Fairly intense cocoa aroma, with notes of vanilla and some earthy hops. Chocolate, mocha and vanilla are the initial flavors. Theres some earthy hops and milk sugar in the background. Medium bodied, with a sweetish finish. Decent beer, but not all that exciting.
