COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
For Scratch #99, we’re revisiting the blissful world of the Belgian-style Witbier, or white ale. This beer typically features a blend of wheat and barley along with spices and Belgian yeast to create a refreshing and complex flavor. With a dense haze from the red wheat and a foamy white head, Scratch #99 incorporates subtle tartness and a delicate orange aroma that complements the spices and the LaChouffe yeast. The finish is dry and crisp.

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – The bee is served a cloudy yellow color with a one finger small white head. The head fades rather fast leaving some light lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a wheaty and yeasty smell mixed with a strong lemongrass smell. Along with these aromas comes a coriander and a pepper smell mixed with a little bit of a bubblegum. There are furthermore notes of a banana sweetness as well as a little bit of bread rounding out the smell.

Taste – The taste begins with a wheaty and yeasty taste upfront with a moderate showing of lemongrass. The lemongrass and wheat grow stronger as the taste advances with some spice flavors of coriander and clove coming to the tongue as well. Toward the end some banana comes into the taste with a little bit of a surge in the lemongrass and a bit of a grassy and peppery taste to leave an overall lemony wheat flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the medium side in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the more average side. The medium body and moderate carbonation are a good compromise for the wheat, spicy, and yeast flavors of the brew all while keeping it a very easy drinking brew.

Overall –An easy drinking wit with a good flavor profile and worth a try, but arguable nothing that is all that amazing for Troegs to make it a regular.

On tap at Twisted Jimmy’s. Strong spicy aroma, coriander and bitter orange peel. Wheaty malt tang. Pale golden cloudy with thin white lacing head. Medium-light watery body with medium-high carbonation. Starts with wheaty tang and light acidity. Coriander with bitter orange peel, very herbal and floral. Fruity tart finish with lemon notes and watery astringency. A dim wit.

Bottle. Pours a light yellow straw color with a withe head. Medicinal like aroma, somewhat like that stuff you spray on cuts, bactine is it? or something like that. Spice as well. Medium mouthfeel. The taste is better than the smell. Some banana notes as well as spice. Some citrus. Not my favorite.

On tap at State Line. Pours a cloudy yellow color, with a large white head that fades slowly. Aroma of spice, some Belgian yeast, light caramelized malts and a touch of hops. The taste starts out with strong spice flavors followed by some citrus sweetness and mild breadiness with a light malt character. The hops are mild but complementary and bring a good balance. The after taste is slightly spicy and bready. Crisp and smooth, light medium body, medium carbonation, clean finish.

Deep hazy golden coloured body with a straw yellow haze and a nice two centimetre tall white head. Aroma of pale wheat, some light floral hops, alcohol, coriander seed and a bit of sugar from fresh fruit. Medium-bodied; Assertive wheat and yeast flavours with a hint of spice, earth, nutmeg and sugars. Aftertaste shows some curacao, bubblegum, passionfruit and a bit of a dry, herbal hoppiness that lingers. Overall, a nice wit, especially in the heat, light and airy, but with a nice flavour profile. I sampled this pint on draught at Pony Bar in New York, New York on 13-July-2013 for US$5, as always.

On tap 4 oz. sample/flight at the Troeg's tasting room in Hersheypark, PA. Very hazy, bright straw-color with an off-white head and and very good lacing. Aroma of banana, lemon, yeast, coriander and wheat. Taste of coriander, banana, lemon, wheat and yeast. Medium/light body and medium/high carbonation. A quite decent witbier and vastly better than Troeg's DreamWeaver. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
