For periods of fasting without solid foods, Monastic brewers relied on the double bock; a stronger, richer beer to fulfill their basic nutritional needs. Known to them as liquid bread, a double bock has a strong malt aroma and chewy rich body. In the spirited tradition of naming a double bock in the suffix ator, we give you Troegenator to provide warmth and richness through the early spring months.

bottle from the brewery’s gift shop. Pours deep amber mahogony, small head with lacing on the edges. Malt and light caramel wisp in the nose. Big malty full body with toffee and dark fruit on the edges. A bit nealy and chewy on the finish.

Pours amber, translucent with a nice frothy 2-finger light tan, off white head with an aroma of malt and caramel with a hint of booze. Tastes of rich amber malt with some caramel character and some alcohol. The hops are there but they get lost in and blend well with the malt. It’s medium to full bodied with minimal carbonation.

Bottle. Pours a clear ruby brown with a sturdy off-white head. Aromas of caramel, toffee and dark fruit. Flavors are caramel, toffee, dark fruit, raisin, cocoa, spice and earthy hops. Rich and malty. Noticeable alcohol warmth. Fairly clean mouthfeel. Nicely done.

UPDATED: JAN 5, 2018 1/5/18 With Abby before watching “Gifted.” Finished week 1 of surgery rotation today. From bottle. Gorgeous deep brown with a thin khaki head. Cool label and name too! Nose is big chocolate malt with some cherry. Taste is more chocolate and cherry up front with a huge roasted malt presence. Not bitter and only mildly sweet. Delicious. Sticky, medium body with a lingering toasty chocolate finish. Not much carbonation. Really drinkable. Overall, this is awesome!! Easily among my favorite non-IPA beers and one of my favorites overall I think.

Pours amber with small head. I couldn’t detect much from its aroma. Tasted good with and medium mouth feel. Did remind me of similar beers in Europe. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

old rating from a notebook i ran across. dark brown with a greyish head. raisin sweet raisiny nose with a bit of alcohol. mmmmalymmm. caramel, dark frit, a bit of toffee, not quite milk chocolate. rich , complex, and an awesome example of a good dopplebock. it is easy to taste the malts and the breadiness is subdued.

12 oz. bottle shared with Gabe. Pours a medium, well retained, ivory head over a clear copper (SRM 17) body......nose is heavy dried fruits with raisin, plum tones, mild toasted malts with hints of bread, cracker, minimal hops. balance to the malts.....taste is moderately sweet with dried fruits, including raisin, prune, hints of cherry, malt dominated, finishing with mild hop bitterness......mouth feel, medium sticky body, moderate alcohol, low carbonation. this is an interesting drinkable, nourishing beer, which misses the style slightly in aroma and flavor complexity. BJCP 8/3/12/4/6

[On tap at brewery] Sweet, nutty brown sugar aroma. Clear chestnut appearance under a thin white ring. Sweet, sugar and lightly spicy brown sugar with faint herbal hops and very low bitterness. Accents of bread crust. Smooth and slightly warming and quite clean.
