Cask at The Lade Inn, Callander. Pours clear very dark ruby with a small tanned head. Aroma of dark chocolate. Taste is smooth, with a light tarty fruity note, acidic even, probably not intended by the brewer, which ruins the experience for me.

Glass at the Lade Inn - a pretty dark ruby with a slim white creamy head. Pleasing aroma of caramel and burnt notes. Taste of mild bitter and hops, smooth on the palate. Worth giving it a try.

Bottle from The Scottish Real Ale Shop. Very dark brown colour, not much head. Mild grassy caramel, liquorice & malt aroma & flavour. Smooth with sweetish afteraste. I am not a big mild fan but this is OK.

Way hey - this is more like it. Sampled this fine ruby red ale in the Lade Inn on August 2007. For me - this was the best beer in the portfolio and the foreign tourists loved it - judging by the number of ruby red pint glasses!. Cask, handpump dispense. Dark ruby red in colour with a nice contrasting white creamy head. Very rich berry fruit in the strong pleasant aroma and good thick mouth feel. Pale, roast and loads of crystal malts in there, giving a fiery malty base and juicy wine gums. Reminded me very much of Caledonian 125!! with the rich fruit flavours of overripe strawberries and a hint of burnt fudge. No hop at all in the aftertaste but dry oak and leather in the lovely finish. The pick of the bunch for me!

500 ml bottle. From the Scottish Real Ale Shop.
Clear dark brown colour with tiny off-white head. Malt, medicine, mild caramel sweetness and mild berries in aroma. Flavour is dark malt, sweet caramel, mild bitterness and hint of chocolate. Not that interesting after all.
