Spawned by freewheeling, Californian hopheads, American Pale Ale is the red-headed stepchild of the classic IPA. Big and extroverted with plenty of bitterness, a great APA shows off some fruit on the nose and the kind of earthy, herbaceous complexity Pinot Noir buffs drone on about when they corner you at a fundraiser. Anyway, we had a thumb through the Tuatara atlas and discovered that us Kiwis are New World too. So we reckon it’s time a New Zealand APA pulled on its dockers, flashed its Backberry and generally talked louder than anyone else in the bar. Here it is!

rosenbergh (11760) - Tampere, FINLAND - JAN 28, 2017
330 ml bottle. BB 03/05/17. Thanks Kiwi-Timo!
Clear golden color with a small white head. Dryish fruity hops, mild bitterness, dry malt and some sugary notes in the aroma. The flavor is old hops, moderate bitterness, dryness and leafy maltiness. It would be nice to know when was this bottled. Anyhow it’s not that fresh anymore. What a shame.

Bottle. Pours slightly hazy straw with profuse, stable white head. Clear aroma of NZ hops, with fruity rouches, and hints of malt and yeast. Bitter, hoppy flavour with floral and grassy notes and touches of fruit. Hints of malt and yeast. Mildly acidic afteraste with estery hints. Refreshing and decent.

MiP (15962) - Sønderborg, DENMARK - JAN 6, 2017
Bottle, 5.8%. Mild soft fruit aroma, mango or something. Almost clear light golden colour. Very big off-white head. The flavour is a lot like the aroma, soft fruit, perhaps mango. A bit spicy. Good mouthfeel. Medium bitterness, perhaps a little above average. Well-balanced.

drjoeng (1358) - SINGAPORE - JAN 2, 2017
5.8%ABV. APA. Poured out golden amber. 12ºSRM Nose has sweet ripe oranges and mandarins. Sweet orange blossoms. Light caramel in the nose as well. Mouthfeel is soapy. Palate has graham cracker, pie crusts, bread crumbs. Hops are citrus peel, pine, cilantro at the end. Bitter is resinous and sappy. Finish is medium with an aggressive bitter that fades quite quickly. Overall drank more like a west coast style IPA than an APA. Goes on Favorites List!
