Spawned by freewheeling, Californian hopheads, American Pale Ale is the red-headed stepchild of the classic IPA. Big and extroverted with plenty of bitterness, a great APA shows off some fruit on the nose and the kind of earthy, herbaceous complexity Pinot Noir buffs drone on about when they corner you at a fundraiser. Anyway, we had a thumb through the Tuatara atlas and discovered that us Kiwis are New World too. So we reckon it’s time a New Zealand APA pulled on its dockers, flashed its Backberry and generally talked louder than anyone else in the bar. Here it is!

Very easy going. Pale golden with a lasting white head. Nice bitter aroma. Soft fizz rolls off the palate with a perfect palate. Pilsner malt goes great with the natural hops..

330ml bottle @ ABV Bar & Kitchen, Taipei. Orange brown good head. Orange hop aroma. Soapy orange flavour. Bitter hoppy aftertaste. Quite sharp. Very orange flavoured bitter pale ale.

Pyobon (1401) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - MAR 19, 2016
(Bottle) Pours clear golden with good white head. Lovely fresh vibrant aroma of grapefruit and pine. Light body with excellent carbonation: both bright and mouthfilling. The taste is driven by hops from start to finish; they are pleasant and not overwhelming, but they are dominant. There’s some nice malt tastes in the background in the mid palate. The hops give a significant bitter finish. A great APA.

Bottled, 330ml at Beerd, Oxford. Hazy gold with white head. There is a pleasant, light hoppiness to this, hints of orange peel, tangy fresh and pleasantly bitter. Reasonable depth, leafy notes. Decent.

Mr_Pink_152 (5004) - Lincoln, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - DEC 3, 2015
Bottle from favourite beer, Cheltenham. Day 3 on my advent Calander. Deep golden colour with a white head. Aroma has soft tropical fruit, and rich oil pine. Taste light sweet start, to a moderate bitter finish.

nasmith003 (252) - Virginia, USA - NOV 26, 2015
