Spawned by freewheeling, Californian hopheads, American Pale Ale is the red-headed stepchild of the classic IPA. Big and extroverted with plenty of bitterness, a great APA shows off some fruit on the nose and the kind of earthy, herbaceous complexity Pinot Noir buffs drone on about when they corner you at a fundraiser. Anyway, we had a thumb through the Tuatara atlas and discovered that us Kiwis are New World too. So we reckon it’s time a New Zealand APA pulled on its dockers, flashed its Backberry and generally talked louder than anyone else in the bar. Here it is!

Spruce and citrus hops to keep a hop head happy, but not too much to scare off my novice drinking buddy. Rich red colour and a body that looks good in its underwear

KeefOz (1842) - Tarragindi, AUSTRALIA - AUG 3, 2015
BB 21/10/2015. Poured a clear dark amber colour with 5mm of off-white bubbles for a head that diminished to a collar that laced OK. Carbonation low and fine. Aroma softly of semi-sweet fruit. Taste with a very tart bitterness; a bit rough. Light body. Crisp, rough and slightly dry with a lingering tart bitterness on the finish.

From Bottle. Poured with beautiful colour and head. Too much aroma for my liking and not enough balance. Enjoyed it less with each sip

Nicko (223) - Ashfield, AUSTRALIA - JUL 17, 2015
Bottle, decent deep amber colour, frothy white head that sticks to the sides of the glass. Herbaceous bitter, biscuit sweet, nice.

Lunkie (1937) - Glen Iris, AUSTRALIA - MAY 30, 2015

GuideDogSaint (1502) - Xiamen, CHINA - MAY 8, 2015

CacheManyHose (726) - HONG KONG - APR 4, 2015
UPDATED: JUN 6, 2015 TST East waterfront. Bottle from Craftissimo. Crisp and bitter but quite a bit more malty than I remembered. Body is crisp, lightly tart, dry. Tasted again on Matt's 31st birthday weekend, side by side with the Aotearoa APA. Lots of fragrant maple syrup crisp malt. Fragrant malt + piney bitterness. More malty and piney than the Aotearoa APA, less fruity and darker in colour. Very good.

HKdIPA (810) - HONG KONG - APR 4, 2015
Bottle from Craftissimo by TST waterfront. From bottle. Should have this side by side with other APA later. Meanwhile. Aroma seems maltier and crisper - less fruity - than the other one. Taste is similar - more malty and hops more dank and resinous (but not that strong) and then bitter. Really pleasant and full flavored despite being on the lighter side. Will try again.
