Kiwis like to eat bread by the truckload, but we’re sometimes surprised to find that wheat can also make a mighty good beer. It gives it a sweeter, cloudier base, while the yeast produces a unique flavour of ripe bananas, vanilla and clove. So raise a glass to the Weiz Guys who invented this brew. It’s the best thing since sliced bread.

Kiwis also know their beer. Way back in 2000, when Carl’s purpose in life was to introduce true to style international beers to the locals, most of us were scratching our heads when we held up a glass of Bavarian Hefe, this cloudy concoction called a wheat beer. 16 years on, us worldly lot have weized up, caught up and arguably overtaken the rest of the world in our craft beer know how. So we have finally given our Tuatara Hefe an identity of it’s own. Because we think you’re weiz enough to figure the rest out.

Taste: Ripe banana, vanilla and clove. Balanced sweetness, with slight tart finish.
Aroma: Banana and clove
Look: Distinctively cloudy
Hops: Pacific Jade
Malt: NZ Lager, NZ Wheat, German Wheat

330ml bottle. Pours cloudy with a small white head. Aroma is a little fruit, maybe some peach and banana notes, but it’s overpowered by funky sweaty bread. Flavour is much better, with a nice peach, wheat and hay start leading into a sweet banana finish. I could quite comfortably sit back and drink a 6 pack on a hot afternoon, but it’s not the most exciting of beers.

UPDATED: APR 21, 2017 330ml bottle into glass. Rich smell of banana and cloves. Cloudy yellow beer with foamy cream on top. Creamy zingy mouthfeel. Sweet, fruity, spicy. A touch of sourness, right at the end. Super easy-drinking.

2016-05-17. Hazy golden pastel yellow body modest white head and lace. Aroma is mild but pleasant, lightly fruity esters and yeast, sweet pale malt. Flavour is pretty standard Hefe , lightly yeasty, sweet pale malt with light wheat accents. Light bitterness and lemon in the finish. Smooth average bodied palate, soft carbonation. Enjoyable. 7/3-4/7/3/14 On tap at Fork and Tap, Arrowtown, NZ.

Very white modest head and clear light gold body, rather meh, not exciting. Fruity wit notes, detergent, peach, refined and appetizing. Flavour is soft peach with hints of citrus. Somewhat watery on the mouth. Not much going on here.

My favourite beer so far, this is the one that got me into craft beers, haven’t really found a wheat beer close this, smells like fruit / bubblegum, gentle really subtle clove with vanilla and banana flavours, need to tip the bottle a few times to mix up the sediment, cloudy in appearance, easy as all hell to drink. Only reason I’m not going 10 out of 10 is due to me being an amateur at this stuff :)

If you ever get the chance to try this please do so, its AMAZING.

Bottle. Cloudy brownish yellow with a large white head. Lots of cloves and pepper, some banana and lemon, slightly toasty bread. Light bodied. Sweet with bread and banana, nice spices at the end. Lacks that wheaty tanginess you sometimes get, but its pleasant enough and quite refreshing.

Bottle. Orange appearance with a small head that soon dissipated to virtually nothing. Slight wheat flavour with some citrus in the background. The embossed bottle was lovely which is more than can be said about the beer.
