COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Kiwis like to eat bread by the truckload, but we’re sometimes surprised to find that wheat can also make a mighty good beer. It gives it a sweeter, cloudier base, while the yeast produces a unique flavour of ripe bananas, vanilla and clove. So raise a glass to the Weiz Guys who invented this brew. It’s the best thing since sliced bread.

Kiwis also know their beer. Way back in 2000, when Carl’s purpose in life was to introduce true to style international beers to the locals, most of us were scratching our heads when we held up a glass of Bavarian Hefe, this cloudy concoction called a wheat beer. 16 years on, us worldly lot have weized up, caught up and arguably overtaken the rest of the world in our craft beer know how. So we have finally given our Tuatara Hefe an identity of it’s own. Because we think you’re weiz enough to figure the rest out.

Taste: Ripe banana, vanilla and clove. Balanced sweetness, with slight tart finish.
Aroma: Banana and clove
Look: Distinctively cloudy
Hops: Pacific Jade
Malt: NZ Lager, NZ Wheat, German Wheat

In spite of my years living in Germany (and drinking imported stout), I am not well versed on this particular persuasion. It does look and smell and taste good enough for me. Could easily come across and a damn good Hefeweizen. The highlight is the lovely banana bublegum aroma and taste.

Cloudy dull yellow. Smells footy...too much yeast. The body is fairly full, but still on the yeasty side of things. Touch style to nail.

Standard haze, etc. nutmeg, citrus, mild banana, faint tropical note, dirt. Maybe it’s been a while since I’ve had I e but it smells pretty decent. The taste is solid and made my mouth water. Well put together taste - citrus tartness rolls jn and out then comes again and stays. Nice spice that doesn’t overrun anything, a bit watery on occasion. Mellow banana fades, drying, zippy zoop znip.

Tap at Fork & Tap pub in Arrowtown. The is an ok unfiltered wheat beer with usual elements (banana, cloves, bread) but there are many better examples of the style. Hazy orange pour with decent creamy white head.

A fruity, cheerful wheat beer that is light and bubbly with a dry finish. Perfect for a warm & sunny afternoon. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

(330ml bottle) Tuatara mixed 6-pack. Pours a thin, quick dissipating white cloudy golden. Some artificial banana flavour but overtones of canned vegetables. Slight citrus, sweet yet almost spoiled milk and horse blanket. Pretty disappointing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPod

Pours an almost clear pale straw with some white head dissolving extremely quickly. Aromas of banana, some clove and wheat. Flavours are fruity, wheat, a little sweetness from the pale malt, and small amounts of clove, hop and yeast presence on the finish. Decent amount of carbonation.

gramity (1673) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - NOV 27, 2012
Pours slightly hazy with a frothy white head. Wheat, banana and clove. The mouthfeel is smooth and I liked the spicy notes here. A decent attempt at the style

Pours cloudy, banana on the nose, cloves of course... taste is not on the sour lemon side of the hefes but sweeter, finish is mildly bitter. The viscosity is quite creamy, which is what brought this above a 2.9. My favourite New Zealand hefeweizen so far.

ciaranc (1102) - Dublin, IRELAND - NOV 14, 2012
Pours hazy gold, not much head, bit disappointing. Nice banana and clove nose, bit of yeasty tang. Taste follows the nose, mellow and not overdone. Like many Tuataras, a nicely done if not overly adventurous twist on the style.
