COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Forget burning fires of damnation, hell has been keeping Germans happy for centuries. Over there it means ‘light’ and is used to describe their traditional lager. But over here, ‘hell’ still means ‘hell’ - as in ‘hell yeah!’ So reach for this brew to round off one helluva day. Crisp and dry with a lengthy maltiness, it’s the light at the end of the tunnel.

After 16 years of producing our Helles lager, we felt it was high time it had a makeover. Don’t worry, there’s no change inside the bottle, it’s still tasting pretty good to us. But now the party on the inside is reflected on the outside. Welcome Helluva welcome.

Taste: Smooth, balanced lager with hints of lemon and a lovely bready malt.
Aroma: Malty aroma with subtle citrus hop aroma.
Look: Golden and clear
Hops: Pacific Jade
Malt: NZ Lager

Sunny gold and bright as bright. Well fuelled, persistent fluffy white head drabs a cloud of foam down the glass. Aroma a blend of peppery, herbal hops, lemon zest and toasted grains. Soft, foamy mouthfeel and very light bodied. Fresh chilled it was dry, dusty and dominated by a New Zealand hop back end that is fruity, citric and herbaceous – low bitterness, also peppery especially after the swallow. Malt sweetens as it warms. Very easy drinking, balanced and quaffable. Don’t quite get that they grasped a Deutsches Helles but a tasty lager none the less! (33cL, BB 29/09/12, Freo Doctor)

Nice, easy-drinking lager. Fairly faithful to the style, if a little bit too low in bitterness and lacking a distinctive malt flavour. Still pleasant and well-made.

Pale golden color. Frothy white head, very carbonated. Sweet malty nose with lots of fresh cereal notes. The mouth is sweet with stewed vegetables and cereal notes. Very carbonated. The beer is fairly fresh - I assume cold conditioned to Japan and technically sound but still not up to top level from Germany.

An attractive and tactile 33cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring. A pale straw coloured pour with a thin white head and very light carbonation; bready aroma with hints of lemon and honey; smooth and grainy in the mouth, with sweet biscuity malts balanced with a grassy bitterness; and a crisp finish with a touch of spice. Nicely made beer in a nicely made bottle.

5%ABV. Helles lager. Poured out gold. 5ºSRM. Head of fine white bubbles. Nose is beery with clean pale malt aroma. Nice aroma of carbonation as well. Mouthfeel is light and carbonated. Palate has pale malt flavor with malt, very light sweetness, white bread, water crackers, soda biscuits and raw peanuts. Hops are noble bitter. Finish is clean with a slightly lingering bitter which cuts the beery character very nicely. Overall a very well balanced malty lager with the hops being a bit more prominent in the palate. Strengths: well-balanced, refreshing, drinkable Goes on Favorites List!

Bottle at the Sheepshank, Bangkok. Poured a crystal clear straw colour with a thin broken white head. The aroma is lager malt, light hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with a light malty, light creamy, woody hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Slight gusher. Murky golden color. Tall off-white head and decent lace. Earthy malt, dry gras, grain, vanilla, light citrus, and some nearly over-ripe fruit. Sure smells like an ale. Sweet start that leads to a bit of bitterness and sugar cookie flavors. Some light molasses in the finish and linger. Wondering if this bottle might have some age on it. 1/14

Tuatara as a whole produce some very good beers, but this is not one of them. It is by no means bad, but the elements of the beer intended to create the ’German style’ are very overpowering and I don’t think I will be buying this again any time soon.

330ml bottle Pale straw color with good head. Not much of an aroma. Mild bitterness and crisp finish. OK.

explosivedog (1281) - Auckland, NEW ZEALAND - OCT 6, 2016
330ml bottle. Pours like a fizzy lager. Aroma is sharp, a little vegetal and some apple fruitiness. Flavour is vegetal, quite sharp, a little too savoury. It is a remarkably good interpretation of the helles style, but that’s not a great thing.

TedE (1355) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - SEP 11, 2016
330ml bottle into glass. Pepper hop nose. Pale yellow beer with thin bubbly head. Medium carbonation. Sweet grainy taste, finish is light malt. Sparkly sweet quaffer.
