This Schwarzbier has been "imperialized" (alcohol content increased) and then left to age in tequila barrels (used Jack Daniels barrels which are then used by Republic Tequila to age there tequila to Repasado or Anejo styles). Aging this unique beer in tequila barrels adds subtle flavors of vanilla and oak while the tequila adds a mild citrus/agave sweetness. At 8.2% alcohol by volume Senor Viejo is our strongest, most seasoned beer. About the name: Senor Viejo meaning "very old man" or "the old one". Schwarzbier, or "black beer", is a German dark lager beer. It has an opaque, black color and a full, chocolaty or coffee flavor. Although they share some similar flavors they are milder tasting and less bitter than British stouts or porters, owing to the use of lager rather than ale yeast and no roasted barley.

Tap at brewery. Slightly transparent black pour, tan head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, vanilla and oak. Smells great. Taste is oaky, vanilla and chocolate. Light coffee. Really nice flavors, lighter body and mouthfeel for a dark beer. One of the better offerings Ive had here.

Appearance is excellent with a thick creamy fluffy light tan head that lasts a long time, plenty of lace and an opaque black brown color. Aroma is dark malt vanilla oak Cocoa citrus and spice. Flavor is like aroma and all of those characteristics blend together in a very pleasing way. Palate is just right. Really an excellent beer not exactly perfect but damn close. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nose of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee and suggestions of vanilla rise from a black hued pour with a large tan ring and minimal lacing. The taste is malt froward - chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla, with hints of coffee and vanilla. As it warms it becomes smoother and more enticing. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Overall, this is a well crafted beer - easy on the palate, very approachable and very enjoyable.

Cola, earth, malt aroma. Pours very dark red almost black with a thick foamy light tan head that fades slowly leaving lots of foam on the glass. Light bodied. Thin mouthfeel. Earthy. Slightly sweet. Slightly bitter. A little bit of toast and oak and a hint of booze.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown-black with garnet-brown highlights deep in the glass and a lacy, fine-grained, creamy cinnamon-colored head. Nose is brown sugar, aged tequila, baking chocolate, vanilla, and cinnamon. Not as sweet on the tongue as on the nose; theres a definite agave overtone to the smoky roastiness of the schwarzbier that contrasts nicely. The flavor is complex; most of the nose elements are present in the mouth as well. The finish has more spice; along with the creaminess, theres a spiked eggnog thing going on. I like it a lot.

Ooh, nice! The roastiness gives it more of a mescal feel than tequila, which is no bad thing. Interesting and unusual without tasting gimmicky.
