Another Polar Vortex is on its way, this time in a bottle. A cold weather friendly Dunkel Lager that has a medium light body and hints of chocolate and caramel. Traditional German hops lend themselves to a crisp finish. You can even steal this pattern for your next knitting project…life’s a stitch, knit it!

UPDATED: MAR 22, 2014 22 oz. bomber purchased from the Beer Cellar, Glen Ellyn, and poured into a shaker. The nose is odd, sweet and bready - like the copies from the elementary school ditto machine. Rather off-putting. Color is a pleasant golden brown with a large head. Taste is pretty good, smooth with a bit of malt, but the aroma drags the rating down.

Poured from a tap. Clear copper color, medium frothy white head. Medium yeast aroma. Medium body with a malt and bread flavor and a medium finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a copper brown color with a dense tan head. The smell is toasted malt, fruit, some caramel sweetness, a bit nutty. The taste is fairly sweet and malty up front, caramel, fruit, nutty ending dry with the toasted malt to balance. Medium- in body with average carbonation. Decent, a bit sweet and thick for the style though.

I’d say this is more of a Vienna or Oktoberfest but whatever. It is not that great one way or the other. It looks nice, bright red brown with a long lasting head. It is kind of sweet and bubblegummy. It had a nice toffee malt character but the fermentation character is off. It finishes with caramel sweetness and some earthy bitterness.

22oz bottle 6/28/14 (Binny’s Naperville)-46° in Mug-Pours a medium brown with a big loose tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel, and chocolate. Taste of the same with some more sweetness. This light to medium bodied brew is not too shabby just not my cup of tea.

Nice crisp deep copper and light brown coloured body with a definite ruby glow and a smallish one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, toasted malt, tons of nuts, earth and a lot of malt bitterness. Medium-bodied; Rich toasted malt notes with the toffee, caramelised sugars and earth right behind. All with a touch of cherry and pit fruit flavours noticeable and a very light metallic twang near the end. Aftertaste shows a well rounded character of mostly caramel and toasted malt notes with a small bitterness and a sweet finish. Overall, a nice dunkles with a robust character and a rich toasted malt finish - well balanced and nice for the style! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in New York, New York (Bowery) on 25-April-2014 for US$6.99 sampled at home in Washington on 09-June-2014.

From HyVee Springfield. Very good dunkle, sweet and toffee and a little roasted but measured. Especially in the sweetness, not too chewy or watery. Serving: Bottle
