An esbls tasting beer. Mahogany with a tannish head. Rich malt and a bit of smoke. Decent hop bitterness mixes with some molasses. Grass. Smoke at the finish. Despite the lower ABV it is a little hot. TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - APR 14, 2011
Draft on tap at Twisted Spoke (Chicago, IL). Newest Two Bros. offering. Pours a near pitchblack hue with some ruby edges, lightens up with the light to reveal a blackish ruby hue, can see through, with a moderate cakey light brown head, like nougat atop. Laces well. Aromas are roasted and sweet clashing, roasted barley and cocoa clash with some sweet caramel, toffee, sweetened chocolate, bread and biscuits. Some touches of coffee, sweet chocolate, toast, a hint of anise. Initial is medium bodied, full thick biscuits and toffee upfront move into cocoa, decent roasted barley, some coffee. Sweeter, with touches of light bitterness, faint anise, and some roastiness into the finish. Nothing overdone in this beer, thicker and lasting on the palate with sweet toffee, biscuits moving into decent roast, toast, light cocoa, and some dry bitterness into the finish. Lingering sweet and roasty malts, a touch of bitter anise and floral dryness. Not bad, lacks some life, but it’s a solid fuller Schwarz. And it’s exactly what it’s supposed to be.
