We spent a long night of brainstorming, around a few pints, to create a beer suitable to big our good friends adieu. We found that Reprieve Schwarzbier is the Artisan lager for the job. This black beer is a Bohemian Pilsner gone dark. German malts, noble hops, and lager yeast combine for our take on this traditional beer style. Though they may be moving on, we wont let the lights go dark.

Poured into a snifter. 3.5 A: Black color. Two fingers of cramy tan head. Retention is average and a honeycomb pattern of lacing is left behind. 3.5 S: Clean roastiness, herbal and earthy hops. Grainy with undertones of caramel and chocolate. Good, but could use some more power. Not particularly sweet, but not dry at all. 3.5 T: Taste is more assertive. Big earthy hoppiness, light roast, moderate chocolate, light caramel. More doughy than grainy. 3.5 M: Medium to heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Could use a bit more creaminess, but I do like how thick this is. 3.5 D: Good, solid schwarzbier. This one is a lot less dry than most of that Ive had of the style. Definitely worth a buy if black lagers are your thing. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 02-16-2012 02:40:13

22 oz bottle. Its black, of course. Hoppy nose, a bit of bitterness, kind of short on maltiness. Not bad, but there are several better.

Nice brown color and a thick head. Slight grain husk pilsnery smell. A bit unbalanced toward metallic bitterness and somewhat flat on the palate. Not the best example of the style.

Appears a dark reddish brown while pouring, but a thin black in the glass. Thick head that goes down pretty fast, and a mildly fruity aroma, like black cherries, or is that the black color? Slightly roasted flavor which Im not a big fan of. Its not quite as smooth as I would enjoy. The fruitiness is also not my thing.

dark brown with a blood red hue, a big tan head, good retention... nose is just wrong, peanut butter and smoke, a little caramel too, plain weird... taste is utter garbage, skunky smoke, ash, bitter coffee, gross... wateresque mouthfeel... this is a total fail, no surprise being another Two Brothers
