COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Holiday Ale is a Biere de Noel, an offshoot of the Biere de Garde style. Traditionally this style was made by just a handful of small farmhouse breweries in France during the few weeks leading up to Christmas. It has a deep malt flavor with notes of treacle, toasted malt, and caramel. The malt character is accented by a mild herbal presence of French Strisselspalt and Aramis hops.

Clear coppery brown, no real head. Nose is soft spicy, touch of wet tobacco. Initial taste is quite roasty, earthy maltiness. Carbonation is firm enough, long pull of oiliness on the mouthfeel. Finishes light spice, nutmeggy and long earthy linger. Not really punching strong in any direction.

Bottle, Appellation Wines

on tap at Crafty's in Northeast Philly - light brown color (looks like iced tea). Nice Christmasy aroma and flavor.

12oz bottle: Clear mahogany brown body with garnet highlights. Small khaki head that fades away rather quickly leaving little lacing behind. Aroma is spicy with a slight booziness and some caramel. Toasted malt, sweet spiciness (cinnamon/nutmeg-ish), then burnt malt flavor-wise. Carbonation is a little on the harsh side, average mouthfeel with a bitter finish. Getting a little better as it warms, but nothing to write home about...average brew.

On tap at brewery. Pours a slightly reddish amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is yeast, toffee, light cough syrup, fruit, and bread. Taste is sweet; toffee, dried fruit, spice, pils malt, very light cherry, light nutmeg, and bread. Light-medium body. Medium carbonation, maybe a little more. Oily mouthfeel. While fully a biere de garde, there's a little vienna lager vibe to me.

Bottle from Appellation Wines Comely Bank. Appearance - deep amber to copper. Nice fluffy head. Nose - pecan, chewy nut thing. Praline, but more savoury. Taste - more chewy toffee and hazelnuts this time. It's a Snickers. Palate - creamy medium body. Fairly balanced on the finish in terms of sweetness and bitterness. Overall - has elements of Scotch ale and Belgian Dubbel. I do like this.

UPDATED: DEC 20, 2017 Nice attempt but after a N’Ice, it falls short. Great color, slightly hazy. Aroma is nice as is the flavor. Well done
